Experiencing problems with Oculus Link on USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports -anyone else?

Hi All,

So I've opened a ticket with Oculus on this but I was curious to see if anyone else is seeing issues similar to mine. I have a USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port on the back of my motherboard and when I attempt to plug in the cable I have that works on my USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports the Oculus software says I've plugged it into a USB 2.0 port and that USB 3.0 is required. Any one else seeing this? All the 3.1 Gen 1 ports work correctly but for some reason the Oculus software thinks the USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports are USB 2.0.

I'm running the following:

Gigabyte Z370 AORUS Gaming 7 Revision 1.The motherboard has the following USB ports and headers:

Chipset+2
ASMedia® USB 3.1 Gen 2 Controllers:

1 x USB Type
-C port with USB 3.1 Gen 2 on back panel of the motherboard

1 x One USB 3.1
Type -C port with USB 3.1 Gen 2 internal header

1 x One USB
3.1 Gen 2 Type-A port on the back panel of the motherboard

Chipset+Realtek®
USB 3.1 Gen 1 Hub:

2 x USB 3.1
Gen 1 ports available through the internal USB header

Chipset:

5 x USB 3.1
Gen 1 ports on the back panel

4 x USB
2.0/1.1 ports available through the internal USB headers

Thanks

Gordon

Did some looking for a non ASMedia 3.1 Gen 2 card and it appears that they are the dominant chipset for the USB 3.1 Gen 2.Can anyone confirm that the issue is the ASMedia chipset and not specific MB implementations and/or drivers?  If it's the chipset this is concerning. With the kind of bandwidth that Oculus Link takes you would think Oculus would be climbing all over themselves to ensure compatibility with the latest USB standards and embrace every little improvement in it. Seems foolish to have to drop back to a lesser standard (USB 3.1 Gen 1) to use Oculus Link. So my choices are; Door #1 to buy a USB 3.1 Gen 1 card with type-C; Door #2 choose to use the Official Oculus cable I've ordered with an adapter for Type-A, (another potential point of failure) or Door #3 go with a 5 meter 3rd party, (typically cheaper) cable that supports Type-A to Type-C without an adapter.

Based on the negative initial impressions of the official Oculus Link cable that I have been reading about on the forum thus far I may end up choosing door #3 and send the cable back.

Yesterday I updated my support ticket to explain that the issue seems to be only with the ASMedia USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports. Let's see what Oculus has to say. If it is as I think and the Oculus Link software is just automatically defaulting to USB 2.0 when plugged into USB 3.1 Gen 2 port because it doesn't understand it then it should be a simple matter of updating the Oculus software to correctly interpret the signals coming from 3.1 Gen 2. If it is a difference in how Gen 2 handles I/O then it might be a much more complex fix.

Hopefully Oculus will respond and be proactive and address the issue sooner rather than later as the USB standard keeps improving and failure to address it when the next standard become more mainstream will result in unhappy customers and returned headsets.

I have the same issue with my motherboard as well. I'm using a gigabyte z370 aorus ultra gaming, the regular usb 3 ports work fine but the link says this one is usb 2.  I also double checked by plugging a different USB 3 device into that port and it works fine.

Hey Strongit,

Thanks for the reply. According to Oculus support there are known issues with the ASMedia chipset with USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports. I also have the Z370 based board and I was using both the 3rd party Anker and PartyLink cables. Unfortunately, there is no fix at this time per Oculus support, hopefully since the Gen 2 ports have some advantages over Gen 1 Oculus will get this corrected in the near future.

My workaround was to get the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super Founder Edition video card which has a USB Type-C port built-in. Not cheap, but I was going to have to upgrade my video card anyway. However, I recently bought the Official Oculus cable and when I saw your reply I decided to test it with the official cable and much to my surprise it actually worked.

So at this point Z370 based boards using the ASMedia chipset based USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports DO NOT work with 3rd party cables, but apparently they DO work with the official Oculus Link cable. Go figure  😕

I would open a ticket so they have a record of the issue and the number of people reporting it so that it will hopefully be addressed. If they suggest you opt in for the beta, don't do it. I did and it really messed things up and I almost had to do a complete uninstall and re-install of the Oculus software and all my apps,  :s

mb - Z87-G45 Gaming

Same issue here. I'm sending back the 5m PartyLink cable because I also discovered that the Oculus software identifies it as a USB 2.0 cable when plugged into the USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port on the IO of my Gigabyte Z370 AORUS Gaming 5 motherboard.
