Experiencing problems with Oculus Link on USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports -anyone else?

Hi All,

So I've opened a ticket with Oculus on this but I was curious to see if anyone else is seeing issues similar to mine. I have a USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port on the back of my motherboard and when I attempt to plug in the cable I have that works on my USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports the Oculus software says I've plugged it into a USB 2.0 port and that USB 3.0 is required. Any one else seeing this? All the 3.1 Gen 1 ports work correctly but for some reason the Oculus software thinks the USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports are USB 2.0.

I'm running the following:

Gigabyte Z370 AORUS Gaming 7 Revision 1.The motherboard has the following USB ports and headers:

Chipset+2
ASMedia® USB 3.1 Gen 2 Controllers:

1 x USB Type
-C port with USB 3.1 Gen 2 on back panel of the motherboard

1 x One USB 3.1
Type -C port with USB 3.1 Gen 2 internal header

1 x One USB
3.1 Gen 2 Type-A port on the back panel of the motherboard

Chipset+Realtek®
USB 3.1 Gen 1 Hub:

2 x USB 3.1
Gen 1 ports available through the internal USB header

Chipset:

5 x USB 3.1
Gen 1 ports on the back panel

4 x USB
2.0/1.1 ports available through the internal USB headers

Thanks

Gordon

Hi Guys,

BeekerMartin, that is really strange that your experiencing the issue with the official Oculus cable. I have the same motherboard as you and with the Official Oculus cable and it works just fine. I was getting the USB 2.0 issue with the 3rd party cables only. My system is completely updated latest firmware, video drivers, Oculus updates, Gigabyte drivers etc and all still works fine.

As far as I know Oculus still has not fixed or even addressed this issue with 3rd party cables and the USB 3.1 Gen 2, not sure why. To the best of my knowledge it only affects systems using the ASMedia chipset, but I gather that is the majority. When I spoke to Oculus support, (see above) they did verbally acknowledge that the ASMedia chipset does experience issues with Oculus Link. Maybe they are trying to force people to buy the Oculus cable, if they could keep it available that wouldn't be a major issue, but it always seems to be out of stock.

Do you have the latest updates on your system?

I also found this on Oculus support, they don't even acknowledge that there is a problem with Oculus Link and the ASMedia  chipset.

Also, if you have this issue, be sure to open a ticket as the only way they are going to address it is if enough people gripe about it. If peeps don't open tickets they will assume it is just a small group and ignore it. In all fairness Oculus support has been very helpful since I bought my Quest, but they can't fix design issues/bugs in the software.

The adapters I ordered aren't working as well. I am getting the exact same speeds as when connected directly to the USB C header on my motherboard. They are supposedly rated for up to 10 gps speeds and and 5A. I have to assume the adapters are not the issue.

I bought this cable used on eBay. It has the Oculus logo on it and appears to be OEM but I just measured it and it is only 10 feet long! Did Oculus ever sell a 10' version of their cable? I don't believe they did. Which most likely means the cable I received is a fake and I need to return it. I will buy a new official Oculus cable next and try again.

Beekermartin,

I would say that you evaluation of the situation is correct. They have never sold a 10 foot cable to the best of my knowledge, so yeah looks like you got sold a fake one which would explain the USB 2.0 issue. Most likely it is just a regular USB cable as opposed to the USB Optical cable from Oculus.

What is odd is it has the Oculus symbol on one of the connectors???

Regardless it is 10' long and not working so it must be a fake. Damn eBay strikes again! I only saved $15 over a brand new authentic cable. Hopefully the seller will allow me to return it for a full refund.

I will try to buy an authentic cable now.

If it was a 9-10ft long cable with an oculus logo it is probably the charging cable that came with the Quest 1.  This is usb2.

I just looked at my Q1 charge cable and the straight end connector (not the right angle end) has a little Oculus logo on it.  I tried using this for Link a few months ago and while it worked ok for simple games, my official link cable still works best overall for me.

Beekermartin,

TomCgcmfc makes a good point. I didn't even think about the fact that it could be a charging cable, but if they sold it too you as a link cable then you still got sold a bill of goods and should return it. Of course there is always the possibility that the seller made a genuine error.

I saw some listings on eBay for the original Quest and I agree with you 100%! I believe the seller thought he had an official link cable but it was actually the original Quest cable that is came with. He said it worked with his original Quest for PC VR and that is probably true for some games. Mystery solved about the cable I received.

I am still tying to find an authentic cable but they are sold out most places or not shipping for a few weeks. I did try a thick USB 3 cable a coworker has been using with his Quest 2 and I am only getting USB 2 speeds. It is listed as USB 3 on Amazon and in theory it should be working. I am trying to leave a link but I am not allowed.
I doubt he ever tested the speed on his Quest 2 so I can't confirm if the cable is good or not. The issues could still be the Asmedia ASM3142 USB controller on my mobo. Gigabyte only has driver version 1.16.38.1 on their website. I found Asmedia has 1.16.56.1 available but I can't seem to find it for download. I did find them on Dell.com. I downloaded and installed it but that didn't seem to change anything. When I check the driver version in device manager it says driver is  Microsoft 10.0.18362.900 still. I don't know. I am not going to spend much more time on this until I receive and test an authentic Oculus Link cable.

@beekermartin  If you still have problems with the official Link cable (or other proven usb3 cables) you may want to consider using a separate pcie usb3.1 card with type c port(s).  There is a thread on this forum that has some good info imho;
Confirmed working PCIe type-C cards for Quest 2 — Oculus (oculusvr.com)

This problem just keeps getting stranger. I have tried all the USB 3.0 headers on my computer and the only one that worked at all with the generic usb 3.0 cable I am using is the red usb 3.1 header on the mobo. All of the other usb connectors would prompt the yellow triangle image and say the usb device not recognized. I had it connected to the front of the case usb headers and I got the same message of course. I put the headset on and it prompted to share data. I selected yes and all of a sudden it started working! I ran the usb test and got a speed of 2.4! I was shocked. I then disconnected it and now it won't connect again. lol

Is there a procedure that needs to be followed to get it to connect properly? I can't imagine there is but why else would it work and then not work?
