Experiencing problems with Oculus Link on USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports -anyone else?

Hi All,

So I've opened a ticket with Oculus on this but I was curious to see if anyone else is seeing issues similar to mine. I have a USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port on the back of my motherboard and when I attempt to plug in the cable I have that works on my USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports the Oculus software says I've plugged it into a USB 2.0 port and that USB 3.0 is required. Any one else seeing this? All the 3.1 Gen 1 ports work correctly but for some reason the Oculus software thinks the USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports are USB 2.0.

I'm running the following:

Gigabyte Z370 AORUS Gaming 7 Revision 1.The motherboard has the following USB ports and headers:

Chipset+2
ASMedia® USB 3.1 Gen 2 Controllers:

1 x USB Type
-C port with USB 3.1 Gen 2 on back panel of the motherboard

1 x One USB 3.1
Type -C port with USB 3.1 Gen 2 internal header

1 x One USB
3.1 Gen 2 Type-A port on the back panel of the motherboard

Chipset+Realtek®
USB 3.1 Gen 1 Hub:

2 x USB 3.1
Gen 1 ports available through the internal USB header

Chipset:

5 x USB 3.1
Gen 1 ports on the back panel

4 x USB
2.0/1.1 ports available through the internal USB headers

Thanks

Gordon

Beekermartin,

If your using the Oculus charging cable you bought, according to Oculus it is not suitable to be used to connect the Quest to the PC. So that could be part of your problem.

Oculus has a list, (I believe) of cables that are "known" to work with Oculus Link, but I would suggest you save yourself a lot of frustration and just buy the official Oculus cable from Oculus. I went through about 5 different cables, some worked some didn't some partially worked etc. Most of them were guaranteed compatible. Since I got the got the official Oculus cable everything has worked perfectly. Yes it is expensive, but its worth it.

Its in stock now, but probably won't be for much longer with the Christmas season barreling down on us.

I ordered an OEM cable directly from Oculus. I'll post an update once I receive the cable.

I am still waiting on my official Oculus Link cable. While I am waiting I attempted to connect to my PC using the 3' USB C 3.1 Gen 2 cable that worked previously. Now even that cable doesn't work. All I get is "usb device not recognized"! I have tried other Type A usb 3.0 cables and no matter what port I try I get the exact same mesage.

WTF is going on now? This Quest 2 is driving me crazy! I never had one issue with my original Rift. I was trying to connect it tonight so I could attempt to install SideQuest. Now I can't even do that.

What should I try next? It doesn't make any sense that I am getting this error message no matter what USB port I try.

I have the same problem with official Link cable. Plugging it with USB3 C - A adapter on my front panel works, but it's being recognized as USB 2 device. Plugging it directly on USB3.2 C (either front or back) port does not recognize the device, which is strange, since my phone gets recognized with the same cable on the same port. So this has something to do with Oculus software not playing nicely.

Asrock Taichi X399 here and both 3.1 gen 2 ports ( A & C ) work fine here for both Quest and Quest 2.

I finally found a solution! I don't know why this was required but it seems to have fixed my issue. I enabled developer mode and now it connects perfectly! I have tried every USB 3 port I have and they all work. The front of the case ports that are connected to the motherboard work. The USB hub in my Acer Predator Z35 monitor all USB ports work. The ports on the actual motherboard work as well. I am so happy to finally have this resolved. Well hopefully it is resolved. I am very disappointed in Oculus tech support for not being able to figure this out. I have wasted hours trying to get this working. I shouldn't need to be a "developer" in order to connect to my PC.

If anyone else comes across this thread try enable developer mode. It isn't difficult to enable. You need to log in the website and authorize it first then turn it on using the app on your phone.

I kinda doubt that had anything to do with this.  But if it helped, that's great!

I literally changed nothing else. I did a factory reset and that didn't help. I tried every driver I could find for my Asmedia USB controller. That didn't help. I enabled developer mode and bam it worked! I believe it has something to do with USB debug being enabled when developer mode is turned on.
