Exploring Virtual Worlds and Interacting with Reality on Quest 3's Passthrough Feature. Can we?

Hey fellow VR enthusiasts and Meta developers,

I recently got my hands on the new Oculus Quest 3, primarily drawn to its promising passthrough feature. The idea of seamlessly blending the virtual world with my real surroundings was incredibly appealing. However, after some experimentation, I've run into a bit of a snag and I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this issue or found a solution.

The concept of passthrough is fantastic – but the lack of ability to perceive your actual environment while immersed in a VR experience is not a game-changer. It seems that the full potential of this feature isn't quite realized in the Quest 3. Am I missing something?

One of the main benefits I envisioned was being able to, say, take a sip of water or grab a snack from my real table without fully exiting the VR world. Unfortunately, as of now, it appears that the passthrough feature doesn't seamlessly integrate with VR gameplay. Whether there's a boundary set up or not, I haven't found a way to maintain a VR experience while utilizing the passthrough to interact with real-world objects in my real room.

I've scoured through the settings, hoping to find a magical toggle switch that would allow me to blend VR games and passthrough without interruption. Yet, I've come up empty-handed.

So, here's my burning question to the community: Am I missing something? Is there a setting or workaround that enables the seamless integration of passthrough and VR gameplay as an option? Or is this a limitation we'll have to live with for now?

I'm eager to hear your thoughts and experiences or solutions on this matter.

Hi @Sake65 🙂

I think it's not about the settings in the headset, but rather whether the game you're playing is designed for mixed reality.
I think most of them are not yet.
So you'll probably have to live with the ability to tap on the headset to switch to your real world and back to game.

Hi Choleni,  thanks for sharing your thoughts! I see where you're coming from, and you make a good point about the current limitations with passthrough in VR applications.

Though I can't help but wonder about the potential for even greater immersion and convenience with future updates with the "Quest 3 passthrough"  in order to switch between the two realities. I like to imagine a future software update with an option like a dimer that allows for a smoother transition between VR and the real world. I envision scenarios where users could enjoy the best of both worlds without sacrificing clarity or safety. Of course, I acknowledge the complexities involved, especially with games heavy on action or requiring precise interactions. The last thing I would want is to compromise gameplay or create confusion for players. However, for simpler VR applications where immersion and relaxation are the focus, like enjoying a virtual night sky while feeling the comfort of your own surroundings, I see tremendous potential with a more functional "Quest passthrough", that could truly elevate the VR landscape and make it more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
