Problem description:
After some time in-game the framerate drops to seemingly single digits and stuttering occurs to the point that the game becomes unplayable. Sometimes this lasts indefinitely, other times it will occurs for a few seconds intermittently. This happens both when launching from Steam and Oculus, at no particular moment when playing in VR. I've closed all other applications but this bug still occurs. Anyone know what could be the cause of this and how to fix it?

System specifications:
CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K
MOBO: MSI Z170 Krait Gaming 3X
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Founder's Edition
RAM: 32GB DDR4 @ 2600Mhz

Setup details:

The Rift is connected to my system through the original HDMI cable to the GTX 1070, of which all three other DisplayPort ports are occupied. The USB cable is connected to a USB 3.1 Gen 2 slot. This has previously worked flawlessly, even when using an extension cable. I have four sensors connected to my PC, one of which is inserted in a USB 3.1 Gen 1 slot (USB 3.0), the other three are inserted in USB 2.0 slots

Reproduction steps:
1. Open any game, either in Steam or through Oculus Core.
2. The performance issues occur after anything between a minute of play and thirty minutes, without fail

Troubleshooting steps already taken:
- Rebooted system
- Restarted Oculus Software and service
- Restarted Steam
- Uninstalled Oculus Tray Tool
- Uninstalled f.lux
- Unplugged & replugged my headset
- DDU'd the display driver and reinstalled the latest via GeForce Experience
- Closed all non-essential background applications
- Turned of Async reprojection in SteamVR settings
- Uninstalled Oculus software, rebooted and reinstalled the software
- Unplugged my fourth sensor
- Set power management mode in the NVIDIA Control Panel to 'Prefer maximum performance'
- Disabled USB Selective suspend

If y'all need any logs, let me know.

Same thing is happening to me. I wasted 4 hours trying to fix it. After months with no issues my steam games are broken.

Go into your power management and make sure that in the advanced settings under USB that it is disabled. If you dont use your headset for a while the computer will suspend the power and cause issues.  Hope that works.

Thanks for the tip, I explicitly disabled selective suspend under power settings (Power & Sleep > Additional Power Settings > Change Plan Settings > Change advanced power settings > USB Settings > Disable USB selective suspend, for later reference), but this did not seem to it 😞

If that happened to me first thing I'll check is CPU and GPU temperatures, and frequencies, through any monitoring tools. Could be overheating, good candidate assuming it happen after a random time.

My GPU and CPU are watercooled, so overheating probably wasn't gonna be the issue, but it's good to exclude it anyway. Temps hit about 50c at max when testing.

Keep task manager open + resource monitor (button on task manager in performance tab) in the background and look into CPU/GPU usage. Make sure to check individual CPU cores, not just the overall number (hence the resource monitor window). This should help narrow down the problem as it will tell you if it's the CPU or GPU being maxed and assuming you have windows 10, what exactly is maxing it. If no single CPU core or the GPU are being fully utilized, then it's probably a USB power issue or something similar.

I would check window task manager for usages in there?
I would.also try taking any of the programmes that moniotr or overclock 1st.
You could try the windows regedit prority settings to high for games.
Will put the infront before any bacground tasks.

I did this and found a virus called "mint" using my gpu. I think it activates when your mouse is inactive. It went away in task manager as soon as I moved my mouse. I searched for it and deleted it. Everything works again for me.

I have the exact same problem in any app or game.. And when the lag starts I go to home and it's bad there too. I've even uninstalled oculus and reinstalled program/drivers with no beta.  Same thing occures after only 5-10 minutes of use.  I rolled back to the previous nvidia drivers, no help.

I'm thinking it's a windows update. But I'm still on 1703, didn't install the 1709 founders update or whatever.

Have no idea, but it's not a virus it's something that went wrong after the last beta was installed.  Hope this is fixed by oculus cause right now my rift is a paper weight.
