FPS halves then goes back to normal, approximately every 15s, in Population One

yomamasophat

Standalone only. I bought it mid March and use it pretty much for this game only. It worked fine for about 3 months, but the last few games it started stuttering badly during the games. I installed OVR Metrics Tool" to see what is going on, and during the game the FPS graph creates a saw-tooth pattern roughly 15s peak to peak, between 72FPS and 45FPS. I recorded an example video of it.

I am guessing it is overheating and dropping the FPS too cool down? Because it starts happening some time after I start playing, maybe 20 mins or so.

Can't find a way to contact customer support, so I'm posting here instead. Thank you.

Hello, @yomamasophat! Thank you for letting us know what is going on. We would like to ask you a question or two so that we can know how to assist you with this issue. We wanted to know, have you tried playing another game to see if you are experiencing the same issue, and have you tried to check for any updates? Lastly, when did this issue first start?

Hi, thanks for the reply. So really the only other game I got is coaster combat (this is my first VR), and this never happened on that game, but also I don't play it for suck a long time as "population one". So maybe half hour for "coaster combat" and 1-2 hours for "population one". The updates are pretty much automatic for the games and the Quest 3, so there is nothing really to update (there have been few of those already).

And it does keep happening still, I JUST finished playing Population One and it had the same problem for like half of the game, and it makes gaming quite difficult and unpleasant. My thoughts are that it is throttling to reduce the temps, but it never gives me any warning that it is overheating, so not positive on that. One related thing is that the weather has been warmer here during the summer, with indoor temperature of around 27-28 Celsius lately. It is dry heat though so does not really feel that hot, and I think the Quest 3 should be able to handle it. Anything else I can check for you? Any software you want me to install? I'm available to do so. Thanks again for your help.

Oh, and to answer your last question, the issue started about 3 weeks ago now? As I said I purchased the Quest 3 mid march, and this started around the beginning of July, so around 3.5 months after I started using the headset.

Hi again, @yomamasophat

Thanks for providing additional information, we appreciate it!

We'd love to test this with other games if it's possible, so we can understand if it's app specific or not.

In the meantime, we also suggest reaching out to the Developer itself and reporting this issue.

Keep us updated.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Well, I'm in no position to test multiple games. Also, every game will load up the cpu and gpu differently, so even if a different game doesn't cause a problem, that does not rule out a problem with the headset. I could test out one game, of similar intensity (in your opinion) if you can provide it to me?

However I think what would make most sense, is that if you guys test it on your Quest 3 headsets, and you cannot replicate the issue, then we can reasonably conclude that the issue is most likely with my headset and it is in some way defective.

Please let me know how to contact customer support that deals with that. Because I cannot find any such contact information, it seems to be hidden from the public.

And yes, I contacted the vr publisher as you suggested, asked them to look at this issue, and will let you know what their thoughts are.

Thank you!

We appreciate the update! Since this issue doesn't occur in Coaster Combat for you, we want to make sure the issue is not with this specific game only, so that's why we advised reaching out to the game developers. Hopefully, they'll be able to provide some helpful information. In the meantime, we're here to lend a hand and provide as much guidance as possible for this.

The device is expected to safely get warm with normal use; however, thermal management is integrated in the design that monitors temperature and contains them within safe levels. Any unusual increase in temperature will alert you with a notification, so we don't believe that this issue is an overheating one, if you do not receive any errors. We have some further questions:

  • Does the device feel unusually hot after a while of playing?
  • Does the fan seem to kick on an sound excessively loud when this happens?
  • Is the headset being used indoors or outdoors?
  • Is the headset being charged when this happens?
  • Are you using any accessories that consume power while this happens?
    • For example, any third party accessories like external fans or battery packs?

We look forward to hearing back from you!

OK time for an update. BIgBox VR has not yet replied to my inquiry.

As far as questions above go,

1. No, not unusually hot

2. No, the fan does not seem louder than usual

3. indoors

4. Yes, I usually have a battery bank connected to it. But it is not able to charge it at 100%, the battery level on the Quest 3 drops slowly. I believe it charges it around 20W or so.

5. No accessories, that consume power. No accessories at all, aside of the battery bank mentioned above.

In addition, I am now 99% sure it is heat related. Simple reasons:

1. It happens after playing for a while, 20-30 minutes of game play are normal at first, then it starts slowing down.

2. It has cooled down where I am, and now this is a much smaller problem. At 28 Celcius (84F) ambient temp. it was a constant problem after the first 20-30 minutes of gameplay. Now that it cooled down to about 25C (77F) ambient, it takes much longer to start happening, and then it is not as intense. I would estimate it's 75% better than at the higher ambient temperature. (Sill, it should not be happening at all in my opinion)

3. Please check my findings by testing at a higher ambient temperature. I would like to know if this is normal for all Quests 3, or if my Quest has some defect (for example deficient thermal paste/pad application on the CPU)

4. As a final comment, it does look like the Quest3 cooling design unfortunately prioritized form over function. The almost non existent cooling slits above /below the face plate are disappointing, and clearly in my case do not work well enough.

Thanks for your help. Please test your Quest 3 using the same game, at a higher ambient temperature (go to 30C to make it quick if possible) and let me know. Cheers.

Hey there, @yomamasophat! We see that you are reporting some temperature readings as well as how Population: One has ups and downs in its performance. In order for us to have an accurate understanding of it being the headset we would need you to try other games. However, we also understand that you have said that you are in no position to try multiple games. Without this information it limits our ability to know what's going on with your exact headset. Have you tried uninstalling the app and reinstalling it? We look forward to your reply!
