GPU overheating after latest Oculus Update

After the most recent update to the Oculus software my water cooled GPU overheats within a couple minutes of booting unless I close Oculus as soon as it auto starts. My GPU is in a custom open water cooling loop with the GPU cooler, CPU cooler, and two 360mm radiators with 3 fans on each rad. No other games get over 60c when playing. However Oculus will cause it creep over 80c where it will then thermal throttle and become unplayable. I spent hours last night trying to diagnose why I went from buttery smooth VR playback to choppy and unplayable. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Oculus and that had no effect.

Also worth noting is my CPU will never break 70c under 100% Prime 95 stress testing, and the cpu is after the gpu. It's not a matter of a problem with my cooling.

My setup:
Windows 10 x64
Intel i7 7700k @ 5.0ghz
Gigabyte G5 Gaming
Gigabyte RTX 2070
16 gigs DDR4

Is there something I can do to stop the Oculus app from causing my GPU melt down? It's definitely frustrating to say the least. This problem is happening right on boot, when there's nothing else running other than the main Oculus app.

Please disregard for now as after trying a few more games I see my GPU is still showing in MSI Afterburner as pegging upper 80c. Going to take the gpu block apart and make sure I don't have a blockage that I can't see through the acrylic top. I'd delete my post but I don't see the option to >.<

One final update for the night - took my GPU water block apart, cleaned it, reassembled it and now with Oculus running on the main home screen I'm sitting at a nice 22c and cpu is around 43c. All is well.

When the coloured coolant in my cooling system decided to seperate after a couple of months I had 'sludge' in both CPU & GPU blocks and even on the curves of the piping - similar to your own situation, not noticed until temperatures went outside of normal for the system.
Glad yours is sorted now, enjoy 🙂

I was running XSPC Opaque White fluid, and when it was drained I noticed it definitely was not the pure white color it was originally. but with all my white LEDs in the case I didn't notice while it was running. I currently have distilled water with a drop of Dawn in it until I order some proper loop cleaner. My CPU block was perfectly clean, so it appears my GPU being first in line took the brunt of the gunk.

Everything is running 100% perfect now. The only thing lingering in the back of my mind is if it could have damaged my card. Just having the Oculus Home Menu at the game select screen caused the card to break 90c. And the other night when I was trying to figure out why in the heck the Rift was running so bad I was trying to play Beat Saber off and on quite a bit. From what I read online the card -should- have completely shut down if the temps got too hot. It was trying to thermal throttle, but even that wasn't getting the temps down and they continued to climb. This soon after Christmas I certainly do not have the funds to replace a GPU I haven't even had for a year  ::neutral:

It was one of the opaque fluids that broke down for me too, although I don't remember if it was XSPC or another brand.
I think you are probably OK with your GPU as they should shut down completely once temp gets critical - so will keep my fingers crossed for you.
