Galaxy map in ED with HOTAS: selecting stars

So I am finally getting the hang of ED. I got a Viper MKIII decked out with lots of goods and getting good at bounty hunting. I have avoided the Galaxy Map until recently. I setup the controller with the axis to move around the galaxy map. However, I can't figure out how to select stars. I want to be able to zoom into star and e.g. click the trigger on my HOTAS and have it select the star.  Right now I see a star I like and I have to take the HMD off and type in its name.  This breaks the immersion and is very annoying.
How can I select stars with my HOTAS.  I have the UI already setup up so I can move around my panels with the HOTAS no problem but those controlls don't see to select stars, they do work to move around the panels in the Galaxy Map though.

I have mine set up with 3 different hat switches for left, right, forward,back, up, down, rotate, pitch and zoom in and out.  It's useable but far from convenient.

Well I have no problem navigating. That all works fine. It's selecting a star. Maybe I am doing something really stupid. Can you select stars with the HOTAS or do you have to type them in?

Well I have no problem navigating. That all works fine. It's selecting a star. Maybe I am doing something really stupid. Can you select stars with the HOTAS or do you have to type them in?

Yeah, you can select them.  Can't use the mouse though.  Just have to move the cursor over the blue dot on the reference plane, not on the star itself.

 
 Sometimes though I need to pitch the view up or down a little otherwise it doesn't select anything.
