The Gear VR on my Samsung S8+ suddenly required update and cannot use Gear VR except the updates are finished. However, everytime I press "install", an error message showed up, says "Network error occurred. Try again later." I've been using the Gear VR for the last 4 years, and the last time it was functional was 2 weeks ago. I did't update my phone or the apps during the time. The problem appeared all of a sudden, and now I have no idea how all this happened. Gear VR is the first VR headset I used, I don't want it to end like this. Please help me to fix the problem.
Thank you!

Hey, @lumberton.thomas! Samsung Gear VR was an important stepping stone in the lifecycle of VR. It brought to life a new world for millions of people and introduced them to what VR was and could be. We'd like to thank you for being an early adopter of this new reality and for taking this journey with us for so long.
Unfortunately, all things must come to an end, and our focus has since shifted to ensure that we can keep focusing on pushing what is possible in VR. On March 18, 2024, we announced we'd no longer support app installations or updates for Samsung Gear VR headsets. Moving forward, we'll only be assisting with Meta accounts. Users can continue using their existing apps for as long as they are supported by the developer. Deleting an app or factory resetting the device will result in a permanent loss of access to the app(s). We regret to inform you of this, but based on what you've told us, updating your Samsung S8+ resulted in a permanent loss of access to the app. You can read more about the changes for Samsung Gear VR by clicking here.
While support for the Samsung Gear VR has ended, we hope you can still find plenty of experiences, wonder, and fun with the apps that continue to thrive on the Oculus Go, and we hope to continue to see you in the Metaverse. We hope you have a wonderful day!

I have exactly the same problem, same VR headset, same phone.
@MetaQuestSupport
You say, it's still possible to use everything, when I do not delete anything or reset the apps to factory settings. But that's obviously not true. Like the original poster I did nothing on my phone, no resets, no deletions, and it is not possible to install updates anymore. So absolutely nothing changed, so why it is not possible anymore to use the Gear VR? It does not make any sense to me.
EDIT: Maybe I found a solution, but it's not super-easy. I will try it now.

(the two links contain almost the same information)
EDIT 2: It works! But I had to use the information from both links, only one of them, no matter which one, did not help me. And it's required to disable Google PlayProtect (not to confuse with the option to install apps from other sources).

Everything was working fine before March 24 2024
After that date, I needed to update some of my google apps, so i turned on WiFi. During this, a forced update was pushed to Occulus app that made it obsolute. So basically existing Occulus app on my Note 8 will never work. The server that hosts the required apps to run Gear VR are also shut off. So its a complete means of making your Gear VR unusable, purposefully.
I tried this solution from a you tube creator - How to Use Gear VR in 2024 ( LostPostProductions ).
It did not Work, the Occulus app kept saying it closed unexpectedly.
But mind you I did not factory reset the Note 8, as i want to keep my other apps that have been removed from google play store.
What I don't understand, and makes me sad is why the GearVr hardware is able to be made completely unusable by a simple forced update to an working app.
I would never purchased the GearVR if Id known this. So that's why and I wont be purchasing any Meta Quest products. Trust takes a long time to build up, but it can vanish instantly in a couple of seconds.

Hi all, I have s8+ too and I did not upgrade it since years. I understand Meta discontinued product, but they did something that bricked our devices. It is not how products should be discontinued and customers respected. They push us to their new products, not sure I want them with this approach.

This is not true. My just stopped working and is in an update loop. Please replace the files and just leave them all alone.

Hi all,
Exactly the same from here : my S8+ system update is still pending but something happened to Oculus VR that requires an update that cannot perform since there is no servers to attend.
I spent a lot of money in OculusVR Apps that I still have installed and I cannot use because OculusVR app or services are not anylonger working because of a manufacturer update : this is a criminal act!!!
I demand a solution.

The solution is simple......
Asking for it, isn't.

I still can not use my Gear VR the date is now 23 Nov 2024. The support team that Direct Message me said they cannot help as they no longer support the device.
I don't understand why the Gear VR ever needed to be signed in via internet just to use it. Its like buying a saucepan to boil water, but its required to be on a WiFi.
It also doesn't make any sense why force an update, when the company said we could continue to use it - without updates.
Is it so hard to provide the files so we can download them and install it via file manager. My note 8, Gear VR is in pristine condition after 7 yrs ( no scratches bumps etc ). Every app Ive installed works - Except this Occulus Gear VR app.
The Gear VR price should have come with a label in big letters stating "Company has right to make this device obsolete via a software update". Then at least I would have been informed and not purchased it. Now my Gear VR headset is just another Electronic Waste to the environment.
