I like the idea of a porthole/wormhole into a friends home environment - whether that has the appearance of a traditional doorway, a stargate, pushing a brick in the wall or pulling a hidden lever... whatever shape it takes, it would be fun to be able to assign a custom function to a non obvious object:

ie. a collection of glass figures on a table top as ornaments, but you move one to a specific location and it 'jumps' you to an assigned location, locally or networked... or a picture hangs crooked, you straighten it to play calming music... you 'sit' in a chair and it opens your notepad or drawing app... the point being a user assigned function based on interaction with an object - an if/then statement or web page easter egg in 'old money'.

Ideally, my home could be tailored to how I want it to function/look/feel/sound as open or private as I see fit, but agreeing with MrUnsleep it has to have the online functionality and ability to network socially at it's core.

You could even have a specific room or holding area where guests would appear when they visited. From a business point of view, our studio has a holding room in the real world where we can filter clients/ projects privately without them observing or us disclosing other business being conducted on site. For me, this aspect would be very appealing in VR and allow me to invite corporate clients to transition through a custom 'portal/room/landing pad' and into an app environment that I'm hosting and where we can review design related material, presentations etc...

Hey @DulcisDesign!! I love how much thought and creativity went into this! 🤩 I really think you should share this suggestion to Ideas here on the forums.

Through the darkness of futures past, the magician longs to see. One chants out between two worlds: Fire... walk with me

Well, before they deleted it, you had doors you could place, that looked like mirrors that shimmered and then you could get them to go to anywhere - to another person's home or to a social event or environment. I had a door to my gf's home, a door to a friend's home that her and I used all the time, and another one to this cool home I found that someone had spent hours on making look very cool.

So they lost all that time too. I really feel for them. I hope they arent also disabled. Heh.

Did you never use the Link home before? It has a lot of functionality. One of the items I earned, from a game I paid for, was a pair of lightsabers, one red one blue that I could turn on and off and display, as well as a Holocron that opened up. You could also display your in-game (for the games you bought knowing they had this feature, as a reminder) achievements as wall plaques. You had functional arcade machines you could set up to play your games through in your home - and various screens you could set to display your desktop, play a film, whatever.

It was awesome and had a lot of potential to get even better. Every week if you logged in you would get 3 random items, and that was exciting as well.

All those times logging in, grabbing my loot, maybe doing some redecorating before I would exercise.... All gone. 2 years worth of logging in and out every week at bare minimum.

Not to mention all the earned stuff from games you could buy - that had those earned items as a feature (at least I always checked to see what was available for each game for Link home before buying, which is enough).

What precisely is the use of suggesting something, that is designed to improve a feature that's been murdered and removed? You can't suggest to add things to HOME, if HOME doesn't exist... now can you? Can you guys like... I dunno, make them bring HOME back? So far that seems like the only suggestion worth anything.

If Home doesn't come back at some point, one alternative is SteamVR.

The SteamVR home uses the Source 2 engine, has fully customisable environments, game trophies, multiplayer, lua scripting, Valve run quests, a primitive Tiltbrush style drawing tool, etc.

Or go the full MMO route with Sansar (the sequel to Second Life). Build custom worlds, add media surfaces to watch content like youtube, make games using C#, far more advanced avatars than Meta or SteamVR. It's probably overkill for just looking around a custom home environment, but if you want more social stuff like watch parties, this could help.

Dagfal here ya go my friend.

https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/fc24ab/tip_dark_mode_for_the_void_while_in_dash/

I used this trick by VRdoping on reddit and now have my void almost dark/black with a grid of white dot, it's better than brilliant white. Meta won't help ya, they only help themselves "TRUTH" l8r's 🙂

Sadly, SteamVR is nowhere near as good as what Home was... otherwise I would have been using it already, and for a long time.

Sansar is way overkill, and also comes with a subscription fee to actually use beyond the 45 day trial... unless you can get it setup exactly how you want it in 45 days and never want to change anything - which is unlikely at best. Sansar looks great but if it's anything like it's predecessor, it will be a huge money and time pit. Not really ideal for a "menu/ui" system, which is what Home was at it's core.

Thanks for the alternative suggestions... but a lot of us would rather just have Home back. Anything is better than a white void at this point.

The 45 day trial is only for the 3rd party clothing creation tool Marvelous Designer, not Sansar itself.

I just went to the System Shock 2 level I ported to Sansar 4 years ago and I can still edit it and walk around in it, and I'm on the free plan.

Yeah I don't even bother with going into the SteamVR home. It's entirely too clunky and limited compared to what I was using with Link. I've looked at it for maybe an hour before throwing my hands up at the unintuitive interface and goofy, limited options.

It, nor the Meta home are remotely good enough to serve as an alternative, nor should I need to subscribe to some new service when the Link home experience was part of the purchase I already made?

They really need to see the light on this one, and go to it.

@LuxLumen

This is a big improvement over the white background , Still not a nice as watching movies with the space background from our homes but at least I can enjoy movies again. Thanks for the link.
