How does the Anker charging dock work?

I've had the Meta Quest 2 and Anker charging dock for a few months now, and it seems to work for the most part. Charging the headset is not a problem. But I'm curious about the controllers.

Not long ago I had found the right controller was VERY hot on the charging dock. I didn't notice if the status of the light at that time. After it cooled down, I swapped the batteries from the left to right controllers to see if the issue would persist, and I haven't noticed it happening since.

But I have been trying to monitor the charger itself. Now I don't recall if previously the controllers would show a charging state in the Meta app, but they definitely do not now. They seem to always show either 70 or 80 percent charged, never more. They do light up amber when placed in the dock and after some time turn green. I'm really not certain if this is expected behavior or not, and I wish I had paid more attention to the charging status and levels of the controllers previously,  but I think I do recall seeing 100% charge in the beginning.

It may not be worth submitting a support request with Anker at this point as it does work, in general. Nonetheless I'm curious to find out whether this is typical or not. Is it supposed to show a charging state in the app? Is it supposed to show a charge only in multiples of 10? And is it supposed to charge more than 80%?

Thanks for any insight.

Hello @evix0! Those are good questions! The charger stand is supposed to fully charge the headset and controllers. For the controllers, you will need to use the rechargeable batteries provided along with the battery doors. The Anker Dock battery status for the controllers will turn green once the battery is charged at 90%. There should be no adverse impact on the controller or performance - it is simply a visual display anomaly. We hope this was able to provide some clarity!

Thanks for your input! I do continue to have concerns over the current maximum 70/80% charge, but I suppose the controller batteries aren't being depleted as rapidly as the headset in any case so perhaps that is sufficient for now, even if not typical. Will continue to monitor. Interestingly, after posting this, I did come upon the right controller heating up again, and this time I had seen that the light was still solid amber, while the headset and the left had turned green. In this case, unlike before, it wasn't burning hot and had only become as warm as a mug of coffee. There's definitely an issue with one of the contacts on the right, but which one I cannot yet tell. I read that the dock does have some manner of over-temperature shutdown, and it probably wouldn't be catastrophic if these types of batteries did explode, so I'm not ultra worried here. Still I wish there was more information available to troubleshoot this problem.

Hey @evix0, so we actually found a good article over on Anker's support referencing the controllers becoming warm. We can link that here for you to go to and look it over.

We do recommend, though, seeing if you can get a different rechargeable battery for your controller from Anker themselves. We can provide their support channel link here as well for you.

Let us know if these were helpful! We look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for finding this! I think that was where I had seen something about there being over-temperature protection, too. Warm batteries aren't much of a concern but it being too hot to hold the controller is a bit startling. I wonder at what level that protection is supposed to kick in, as I would estimate the temperature was more than 70 degrees Celsius, but perhaps that's within tolerance.

In any case it hasn't been a huge problem. Thanks for your help.

You're most welcome, @evix0! We're here to happily assist you. If you ever have any more concerns or questions in the future, don't hesitate to reach out to us anytime. Take care and have a great day!
