How to get DK1 to work on Windows 10?

Greetings,

I just did a fresh format and it seems that everything I download to get the dk1 to work has only caused me errors. I installed the new runtime, and it says I need all the new stuff from the CV1, as I plan to get it sometime, now is not the time. I installed the 0.8.8 after that and then restarted my computer and it wouldn't even boot. Like windows wouldn't boot into my computer. That kind of problem. This guy in his video directly points to Oculus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2f-GorXWkoc

I don't think drivers should be doing that... so, could somebody point me in the right direction to the right driver that won't break my computer? I am so angry and fed up with Oculus they're ditching support for the old tech, when it's perfectly good tech and pretty awesome to boot. I for one enjoy the lower res as it is less cpu intensive, I have a great cpu that supports up to 4k, buuuut I don't want to risk burning anything out as my luck I am prone to that sort of thing happening. I'll wait until I can afford both an oculus and a new cpu/gpu (incase anything happens in the long run.)

Every forum I check seems to run short, I just need to know the definitive answer as I can't go through formatting/restarting again.

Thanks for you help!

Okay, I figured it out, here are the steps.

Leave device disconnected

Step 1: download 0.7.0.0 - https://developer.oculus.com/downloads/pc/0.7.0.0-beta/Oculus_Runtime_for_Windows/

Step 2: Run as administrator

Step 3: Install

Step 4: Connect Device

Step 5: Install Virtual Desktop or other programs needed

Step 6: Profit!

Thanks a lot for all of your information, it was great help, I love this community! ❤️

okay, everything is installed with no crashes (yay) but the head tracking seems to not be working. also is there a way to get steam vr to work?

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be hostile or anything alike. I understand that by poking around with the SDK (drivers) one can achieve what's not officially supported with various results. 0.8.0.0 is the version that has Windows 10 support that's stable enough and for some that support is broken if your Windows 10 has the latest updates (nothing is detected anymore or the drivers crash). This is all understandable because the last SDK version to officially support DK1 was 0.6.0.1. All stuff written for SDK level 0.5 (and prior, which is most of the content laying around) was broken when 0.7 was released and remains broken if not recompiled against the newer SDKs.

That being said, if you don't stick to the SDK stuff, I think you might have most luck with OSVR or vorpX, but the later most likely requires a special version directly from the DEVs - you should ask this in their forums. I hope @Melhadf comes around and tells us how he's gotten SteamVR up and running.

I've not had an issue installing 0.8 then steamVR.  All in windows 10.

0.8 is by far the biggest problem, you need to mess around with the debug HMD type and logging.  Set Debug to DK1 first and Okay it, then go back and change it to disabled.  Logging just needs disabling.

SteamVR can be installed from Library > Tools.  Running the setup will complain of no lighthouse or motion controllers, but as long as it detects your HMD it's fine.  You can ALT-F4 out and continue the setup 😄

To run a SteamVR game either click it and select the non-oculus VR mode OR if you have a controller connected click the steamVR icon, put on your dk1 and use the controller.

It's all about the patience to set it up and try again at whatever part fails... because windows 10 and Oculus are both determined to lock you down to a very particular type of experience.

Edit: In answer to your positional tracking question... I have nothing setup,  99% of games don't make much use of it anyway so it's never been an issue for me.

Are you sure the USB cable is a data one?

I purchased vorpx and sitll having supreme errors. Very upset with this experience, I have no idea what to do when it comes to stuff like this. http://i.imgur.com/a2xfhjw.png

When I figure something out, there's another hurtle. It's a walk through a park, at night, and you accidently find yourself in a dark forest touching every tree to find your way out. I hate this, I hate computers because of this. I swear one day when I make some money I will build a regime against developers who leave people in the dark like this. If they plug in a USB of any selected device for the first time on their computer and not instantly greeted with a little hi-how-do-you-do. They cannot market their device. I don't know, I'm probably rambling because I'm upset I can't get a thing to work, but still it's so upsetting. I've exhausted almost all of my time off of work, I chose to do this, I understood it would take some time, but seriously, this is hell. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. Maybe a tiny bit, but still. ._.

Okay now I installed 0.8.0.0 still same issue, also it added a slight lag to my computer, and my oculus disconnects and reconnects over and over and doesn't stop.

I have a similar problem. I want to get a Rift S in the near future, but can't afford it yet, so I thought I would buy an old DK1 to familiarise myself with it first. What a big mistake in Win 10. In the Config settings I can view the Demo scene, but that's all. Can't see my desktop. Can't view Youtube VR videos. Can't find any games for it. Can't use it in Unreal Game engine. The DK1 says no signal. Its rubbish. While I don't expect Oculus to provide support for older models, I strongly believe it is wrong of them to remove the driver downloads and useful information. Its not like it costs them much to to that, given that it exists already. Now if I do buy a Rift S or a Quest 2, how do I trust them to sustain drivers and info in future? On top of that, I don't get the whole forced into Facebook thing. I hate social media and don't want an Oculus to use Facebook. I just want a VR device that lets me use VR software, without being connected to the internet, adverts nor 'friends'. I have real friends in real life, and I like to keep my life like that. So, does anyone know how a noob like me can make this wretched thing do something? I don't know what SDK, 0.0.0.8, 0.0.4 nor CV1 mean. I really am a total novice. PLEASE HELP!!!! Thank you.
