I just need two questions answered, one by someone with experience, the other by random peeps

so the first question is kinda simple, could maybe a mod or dev or someone smarter than average tell me how good these laptops (I know desktops are undeniably better, but the gaming parties are never here) would be for an oculus DK2 (maybe eventually a CV1, but the DK2 is what I expect I'll have for the next year);
the cheaper one with the little sale; http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX62145
or the more pricey one?; http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX59294

and thus the guess-at-able question; every time I attempt to run a direct-to-rift or Unreal Engine game the windows firewall popup comes up and nothing happens after that(I've disabled it before, it's not the problem) and every time I try to run it after that it freezes after about a second. So I have no idea what to do now .

My laptop-
MSI GS60 2QE-045US Ghost Pro w/ Core i7-4710HQ, 128GB SSD, 1TB, 15.6in FHD, GeForce GTX 970M, Win 10 (with all the latest nvidia drivers)

It's great to hear that the 970m works with Oculus, thanks for reporting. I think the reason you see the hesitation is because traditionally the "m" cards don't match compatibility with the regular cards and they certainly don't match power. We have grown accustomed to not making promises we can't personally verify because this is expensive hardware, both the pc and the goggles, and people rightfully get upset if it doesn't work. You also can't upgrade so when new projects come out its likely the 970 (and 970m) won't be enough.

I assure everyone's looking out and very cautious, Oculus itself included, to recommending anything that doesn't meet the high requirements. Those below it COULD work, but there's no promise it will work. Also as someone else said, running at that load could reduce the life of the laptop, which you won't discover until much later.

Okay, at the risk of giving you an answer you do not want to hear.

Do not buy a laptop

No amount of portability is worth the trade-off you have to make in either performance or affordability.

What I'm saying is that if you hate unplugging your pc and moving it to a different location (for your gaming parties) for the same price of an actual decent gaming laptop you can buy 2 desktops.

Leave one at home and have the other one as a carry around. (you can even build a case for it.

I remember the LAN party days, and this was before widespread adoption of flatscreens even, people would lug their 20" Ilyama montors around.

I will never be convinced that a laptop is a sensible purchase if at least one of the goals for that particular machine is performance gaming.

Unless perhaps you spend a disgusting amount of money.

If you have that kind of money, still buy a desktop but buy a CV1 and a Vive to go with it.

Definitely what  @CharlieHobbes  said. Although you can buy some laptops with a desktop GPU build in but that are so beefy and heavy I don't really see the point with the amount they actually cost.

With that budget you could easily buy/build a small form factor machine with a carry handle to help carry it around to your parties. Even buy a nice flight case for it as well with room for your keyboard, monitor etc.

Ok, makes much sense, but I just greatly appreciate the mobility of a laptop and I plan on using it for school once I finally figure out what courses I need to take and I don't think schools appreciate you bringing out a gaming rig in the middle of class.  I did some more searching and I think I may have found two really good ones seeing as the gtx 980m isn't even as good as the gtx 970.
These are GTX 980 laptops, the crème de la crème;

yes, I've seen the price and I'm saving up for a car before I get that, so I'm not worried.
Also- no ideas on the D-T-R/ UE4 problem?

More than just the performance issue, if you get a laptop with a mobile GPU, chances are high the Rift just won't work, period. That's why Oculus doesn't support laptops. Theoretically the ones you are looking at with a true 980 should work, though. Dunno about Windows Firewall, I don't use it.

Not to mention the stress vr would put on even the higher end laptops would diminish its lifespan greatly. The fans, psu, gpu and cpu would be working doubletime. And thats if it didnt just melt after an hour or so of use. Gear VR is your best bet  for mobile VR at this point.

You can go with an Alienware and then get a graphics amplifier for running your Rift. When you want to game on the go just unplug the amp and go.

Sounds like hes on a budget. An alienware setup with an amplifire will cost twice as much as a desktop setup. At this point I dont think VR is aimed at the everyday regular normal guy. Its aimed at early adopters, developers and enthusiasts. I wouldnt dump alot of money into it just yet. Though it is awesome and will be next level on so many fronts its only at its early stages.  Advances in hardware and software will  change alot of the playing field in the comming years. Enjoy what you got now and let time take its course.

Straight up, pretty much if you buy a laptop it won't work at all. The only ones that even have a chance of working at the ones with full desktop 980 cards. If you buy a cheaper laptop, I can almost guarantee it won't work. It doesn't matter about the performance. The software will not even install.
