Is it damaging to charge quest 3 while playing?

Of course with the stock quest 3 wall adapter, but with a syntech 16ft cable. Though what I am more concerned about is wether it is damaging to the device to be charged while playing, short term or long term.

Hey there, @dmichael.2024. This is a great question, and we totally understand the desire to make sure you're able to maximize your battery safely, so we appreciate you bringing this to the community! Currently, we do not recommend charging your headset during gameplay or leaving the device to charge past 100% as this can cause battery deterioration. To help maintain a strong and healthy battery, we do recommend checking out our Meta Quest Help Center for different tips and tricks, just like @Occupunk mentioned. While VR sessions can get intense, we do want to make sure to take breaks and allow the headset to charge before getting back to the action!

Back with the quest 2, I would have argued that there would be no difference between plugging the headset into the wall adapter vs. using a headstrap battery, because they are both very similar. The wall adapter put out 5v and so do most batteries. With the quest 3, its more of a question mark for me. Now the wall adapter puts out 9v while most batteries continue to put out 5v. I have one battery that puts out 9v and one that puts out 12v, and I'll never use the 12v on my quest 3 because the cooling fan spun up very fast the first time I tried it. And heat is my main concern when it comes to long term damage.

All that said, I personally believe (with nothing to base it on) that 9v is probably OK and I would use the supplied wall adapter if I used wall adapters. However, I don't like getting tangled up in the cords, so I use batteries instead. I am concerned enough however, that I would not use a 12v battery. My opinion is based soley on whether the cooling fan running is noticable or not. The good thing about using the meta wall adapter is that I can't see them saying that it would void my warranty ... not sure about 3rd party accessories. That is just a risk I am personally willing to accept.

I don't think you should have any problems as long as you start off with your Q3 headset battery charged to at least 80% (preferably 100%).  If you start off with say 70% or less, I've found that charging while using can result in higher headset temperatures.  Above 80% the battery management usually automatically reduces the charging rate.

As far as actual charging goes, I think leaving it on charge overnight is fine, but not leaving it on charge 24/7.

I hope this helps mate,  Cheers.

Hello, I was wondering if it was ok to charge your question while playing, I know that you already answered this, but my question is a different version of the question, if we do play it, is it safe for the Oculus and it will it break? Also, when you're charging, it does this thing get loose when you're charging it aka the charger port because I heard it's very bad is this true, please answer my question, because I don't know what to do

Hey @Spookyy3, we're just dropping in to shed some light to your questions.

  1. We advise you to not charge your device while your gaming, because it can result in battery deterioration.
  2. The charging port should not become loose with standard charging methods. However if your charging the device while using the headset, this may become an issue.

We hope this answers your questions about using the Quest 3 while it's charging. If you have any other concerns or questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us. Have a legendary rest of your day!

@MetaQuestSupport Does this concerns the charging dock too? Leaving the headset charging above 100% on the dock could cause faster short/long term battery deterioration?
