Link Crashes every 10 minutes

AWhyWolf

I have a Quest 2. When connecting it to the PC via Link cable it works perfectly fine for about 10 minutes and then it crashes. When it crashes there are some artifacts on the Quest, kind of like a line that glitches over the screen and the rest of the images are still. The software (game and rift software) on PC runs perfectly fine without it crashing, indicating that its not an issue on the game itself.

On the quest I then press the quest button and the normal quest (home screen - non PC rift) panel opens up. When I select the button to go back to the Link app, I am greeted with an indefinite three dots. In order to get back into Link, I need to restart the headset, sometimes it works when I unplug the cable and plug it in again, but I need to re-initialise the Rift app on the quest.

Technical stuff:

I am running this on a PC.

  • AMD Rizen 5 3600X
  • 32GB of ram
  • Use to run it on a Nvidia 1070 (exact same issue), upgraded to a 4070 because I suspected it was my GPU
  • MSI Motherboard

Tried everything. Nothing works. Here is a list of things I tried:

  • Swapped USB ports (tried every single one on my pc)
  • Updated all drivers
  • Tried a new cable (bought a new cable to try and sort this out)
  • Updated all software
  • Turned off USB power management
  • Turned off other power management - everything is now turned on all the time
  • Turned off antivirus software
  • Upgraded my graphics card
  • Got 2 new cables and tried  / tested everything with them
  • Got a new USB card (USB 3.2) to see if that will work
  • Repaired the Rift software
  • Sent logs to Meta Support - got a list of things to do that I sent them.
  • Opted out of the "public test channel"
  • Messed around with graphics preferences (tried all Hz)

Games I tried:

  • VRChat
  • Gorn
  • Half-life Alex

This happens both when simply using Rift (no third party software), and when using SteamVR.

My theory now is that it is an issue on the Quest 2 itself and that the link app just crashes after a few minutes. I think there is something wrong on my unit, but I have no way to validate or test this. Oculus support has not been helpful as they immidiately jumped to "your graphics card is not supported"??? OK I had a 1070 with the same issue. Really frustrating.

I have submitted multiple bug reports on the quest when this happens - no interaction from the meta team for these.

Question here is if anyone managed to get this issue resolved without replacing their Quest? is there a way for me to send in my unit to be checked (I am in a third world country)?

For context this is what the crash looks like: (24) oculus link freeze - YouTube

I do also have this issue, for it disconnects every 10 minutes and still runs on the pc, it could be something disconnecting it but I've tried alot of tinkering and nothing has fixed this.

What seems to be working for me is to unplug all other USB devices (keyboard and mouse included) and only have the Quest 2 plugged in via link cable. Perhaps something is causing interference?

Maybe give that a try - I was able to play for 30 minutes without any crashes when doing that. it is inconvenient, but at least it seems to be working. I will give an update after more extensive troubleshooting.

For me its Easy anti-cheat, because if i end the task in my task manager and the game won't crash every couple 10 minutes

The issue came back for me, crashing every 10 minutes. After many tests I figured out I also need to close all applications on my PC except for the Oculus app. Close Discord, BattleNet and GForce Experience. Don't leave any of those open as this will cause the crash.

I will test this later in the afternoon, to see if i get the same thing, but what i can refer to this, is either oculus or whatever is bring a image over to the headset really hates being pushed to a background tab, or oculus's pcvr link is so demanding that it doesn't want any other programs open.

This method did work first try for me, but not a very good one💀, if to say were recording your gameplay or streaming then you'd need those in the background but then you'd occur with the same issues, it is something with windows and meta not interacting nicely with background tabs or Oculus being included with another application
