Mage's Tale issues

I have just purchased a Mages Tale for rift. I downloaded it twice today and yesterday but in the 'Meta Link' application on my PC it says it is not installed and do I want to install it. The third time it downloaded but on virtual desktop when I try to shart it the screen goes black for about 20 seconds then the game quits without doing anything.

I even tried setting up AirLink but that wont even complete the final step starting quest air link via the quick settings menu.

I am on PTC v66.0.0.488

Does anyone have an idea what the problem may be?

Hey there, @andythw, we understand that you are experiencing issues with installing Mage's Tale. We don't want our users to experience these kinds of problems when trying to install a game they have been wanting to play. The following questions will help us understand what can be the cause of this issue you are experiencing and possibly provide troubleshooting for you. Please provide the following:

  • Does this issue only happen when trying to install Mage's Tale or does it happen with every new app/game you try to install?
  • Have you tried disabling PTC then proceed to install Mage's Tale?

We hope to hear back from you soon!

1 . I have other games installed on the Meta Link application and none have had issues (even some Rift only) apart from Mage's Tale. I did install it in the end but it is the only game I purchased and installed when on PTC.

2 . I have not tried turning off PTC then installing a Mage's Tale.

For info my quest 3 is on PTC running 66.0.0.488 but the Meta Link app is not on PTC and is running 65.0.0...

Hey there @andythw. Thank you for the quick reply. Something we did want to ask was if you are getting a specific error code. If so, can you please let us know or attach a screenshot/photo. There are also some steps we're going to list below that may be able to resolve the issue. The steps will allow you to uninstall and reinstall the PCVR app on your PC and a few other things in order to go through the links in the chain of connection between the PCVR app, your headset and the game where something may need to be adjusted.

The steps are as follows:

  1. Check that the headset is connected to the correct GPU. Both the headset and computer monitor must be plugged into the same graphics card.
    • This is not possible on some laptop computers due to their design. Where not possible, the computer is considered incompatible. Recommend the customer try using the headset with a compatible computer.
  2. Restart the PC.
  3. Make sure GPU drivers are up to date.
  4. Launch the PC VR app by right-clicking on the shortcut and selecting "Run as Administrator"
  5. If only happening with some apps, uninstall and re-install the problem apps.
  6. Add the application to the antivirus software's whitelist.
  7. Try another Windows user account with admin permissions
  8. Repair the PC VR app.
  9. Manually re-install the PC VR app.

After applying these let us know if this works for you or not. Hope this is helpful. We're looking forward to your response!

There is no error code just a black screen on virtual desktop. I tried setting up Air Link but on the final step enabling quest li k via the quick settings menu the option is greyed out and not selectable. So as my desktop PC and quest 3 are in different rooms and I cannot setup Air Link my only option is virtual desktop. I only have one GPU, a RTX 3060ti on the latest drivers. All other tests will need to wait for tomorrow.

Hey @andythw. Thanks for the speedy reply. After doing some more digging into the issue, it looks like Mage's Tale is only compatible with Rift and Rift S. If you reference the link here, you'll be able to get more details on the game and it's compatibility. Things are always changing with game developers, so may be something that changes in the near future, but until then, it looks like your headset is not compatible with this particular game via PCVR. We hope this was insightful and that you continue to explore other games and apps for PCVR that work with your Quest 3. Let us know if you have any further questions. We're here and open to supporting you in every way possible!

Since yesterday a Mage's Tale has uninstalled itself. I am downloading for the forth time. I have restarted my PC and checked for updates, I found a couple of virus definitions. I still cannot add my headset to Air Link, the option on the quick settings menu is greyed out. I don't understand why some Rift games like 'Devil and the Fairy' work for me but 'a Meges Tale' only black screens. I will keep trying but if it continues to fail I will have to refund it.

I found out something that could explain some things. I restarted my PC and a Mage's Tale has uninstalled itself again yet other Rift games I have are fine.

@andythw  just out of curiosity, how much spare space do you have on your game drive? I had a similar issue as my game folder was nearly full. Adding more storage or selecting a different default location for the downloaded games solved it for me.
