Managing sharing with 2 parents and child

AitrusX

Good morning,

We have 3 accounts on our quest 2 - 2 parents and child. We had no idea how much the configuration of accounts was going to grief us when we excitedly got our accounts ready to use the device. We have this setup:

1) ME - father - admin

2) My wife - parent of child

3) Child - child account under my wife (2)

After buying beat sabre on my wife's account and realizing nobody else can use it we now understand purchases need to be on the admin account to share with the other users on the headset- support is still working with us to try and transfer beat sabre over to admin account.

So lesson learned - I buy job simulator for my child on the admin account - she can't go in without parental permission, which is my wife. Now all 3 of us have to be involved with setting up games... but ok. The wild thing is when the request comes in to my wife the only option is "allow and purchase". But I already purchased it... we just need to give the child permission... we lookup what the hell is going on and find nothing, so we go back and see what happens if we just keep going forward on "allow and purchase" without buying this game a second time... at some point the app decides permission is granted but we never saw anything that said "allow but dont buy" or othewise separating these 2 actions?

It feels like a freaking labyrinth navigating what I have to think is not that unusual - 2 parents + child sharing VR and games... like, why cant we have 2 parents managing the child (i.e. the way google family link works)? Why cant we move the child between parents without having to delete her account and wait 90 days? Why isn't purchasing content and providing permission separated (I think I know the answer to this one which is predatory in nature)?

Hey, AitrusX and thank you for your patience! We understand that you have some concerns with your parent-managed account. We know how stressful it can be to make sure everything is working properly. No worries; we love to help get this resolved for you. If you go to your family center and log into your meta account, you should be able to scroll down to "Manage your child's meta account." You should see where it says you can manage the child’s access to apps and social features. We have also provided the steps on how to create a parent-managed account here just in case.

So that we can gather some personal information from you and look into your accounts, we ask that you PM us. Please select our name to get to our profile page, or click here. Next, click "Send a Message" to privately message us! Please remember, you must be signed into the community first to send us a private message. We look forward to hearing from you!

This sort of misses the point? Once my kid has the headset on there is nothing stopping them from just using the parents account to bypass any time limits or content restrictions I have applied. The headset should allow you to set a PIN on your account so that when anyone puts it on they need the PIN to use your account. The PIN shows up when purchasing, so my kid cant purchase new items without my PIN but they can totally bypass the restrictions I have for them (even unintentionally) by just using my account from the headset.

I agree with all your gripes, but one part of it might be helped by my post here:

https://communityforums.atmeta.com/t5/Get-Help/Authentication-should-be-required-to-switch-to-the-ad...

That's for helping with managing the multiple accounts and keeping your admin (and other parent's) accounts locked behind a pin while still allowing the child account to be used without a pin.

Sorry you got the boilerplate response instead but not surprised. In general, I've found most tech companies to never make an actual robust solution that both takes into account that families are more complex than just one admin account and one child account. Hey, at least it lets you set up time limits for each child account here! Nintendo's is so dumb that you can only set a time limit for the entire SYSTEM rather than per-account.

And yeah, I hate the "Allow and purchase" which really only means "allow". Freaked me out and really convinced me I was going to be paying again. Plus it seems like it downloads it TWICE, which just eats up more space on your device.

Hey @AitrusX! We're hoping that the link that @ItsVirtuallyJason was able to provide suitably resolved the rest of your issue. Why has it been a year and meta quest doesn’t care about keeping children safe?

Why cant both parents manage supervision?? Yet kids can waltz right into a parent account and bypass all age limiting content and time limits?

I agree it's VERY annoying that they don't understand that kids have more than one parent.

But in terms of "waltz right into a parent account", they can't if you put a passcode on the parent account.

We are in the exact same position. My husband bought Beat Saber as the device owner, but because I am the supervising parent (not the device owner) and technically didn’t buy beat saber, we can’t share it on my kids profile.

Realizing now that it would have been easier to make my husband/device owner the supervising parent. And now I can’t find a way to delete my child’s account again and start over. So frustrating!! Wish Meta would be more transparent up front about how this all works.
