Meta Move discontinued and how to make your users move away from Quest headsets

elafynoh

The Meta Move app will be discontinued after March, 31, 2025 with the reason noted:

"Move currently relies on legacy technology, which limits our ability to introduce new innovations for Quest users. This transition will allow us to deliver more advanced and exciting features to enhance the Quest experience."

Seriously Meta ? If you remove this app and take away features from your product without providing any other option it will make your product less useful. Move is an important tool, which i personaly use every day. And the reason of the curren app using "legacy technology" does not seem very logical to me either, especially because this would imply that there must be a "non-legacy technology" exising, that could be used instead.

Same here - I also use the Move app daily, but would not mind to see it go away if there was a replacement. Unfortunately, there isn't.

FWIW, on Reddit there are many people complaining about it.

I was naive enough to contact the Meta support to ask if there are plans for a new, similar app, but the attendant had no idea of what I was talking about... 🙄

There are a few reasons I can think for Meta to remove the Move app:

  1. Meta's current focus on hand tracking: if the Move app requires a controller to work, the calories count with hand tracking would be off by a wide margin. I could live with the app counting calories only when using the controllers, but that could create confusion for other users.
  2. Perhaps Meta plans to sell an external tracker for calorie counting?
  3. API changes due them opening the Meta Horizon for other platforms could partially explain the "legacy technology", but as you wrote, another API could easily be developed - and perhaps that is exactly what they are doing, but that would break compatibility with current apps

This truly sucks. I love having that timer in my VR vision so I know how long I have been working out and it keeps me going as well as the estimated calories burned even if it may not be accurate. It is an estimate and pushes me to keep going. Meta, get a replacement then update it, don't remove it!

It is official - Move is, for now, dead, and there won't be a replacement anytime soon...

(UploadVR) Meta CTO Explains The Reason For Killing Move, Quest's Fitness Tracking Feature

During his latest Instagram "ask me anything" session, Bosworth said that while Move has "a small but loyal crowd" of users, this crowd isn't big enough to "justify the expense of continuing to maintain and keep it going".

"We've done this a couple of times recently, and every time we do it, obviously it tremendously affects people in the community who relied on it, who are using it, and that sucks, so I am sorry about that", Bosworth says.

Bosworth's mention of doing this in the past is likely referencing the recent removal of the Scoreboards app on Quest, which let users view their Achievements on the platform, with him giving the same justification for that.

I want to add myself to the list of the very disappointed. I also use the move app daily. Fortunately, I've been slowly moving away from all things broligarch, and Meta is giving me one more reason to abandon its VR ecosystem and move onto something that is more, specifically, for athletics. I hate that Meta bought Supernatural, and wedded it to this ecosystem. Monopolies are terrible for competition. Shutting down a feature without reaching out to the users? This is bad business. It's bad for VR and its bad for the country.

@elafynoh  @Hinesight  @FunKing  @NidaGoodliffe  if any of you have the move app still on your headset, it may be possible to make a copy of it using sidequest and download the copy to your PC.  It might then be possible to sideload the move app back onto the headset and use it as you've done previously.

It's already gone. I had considered doing that, but we can't be sure it would still work in the long run—if it did, I suppose they wouldn't have bothered removing the app in the first place. Still, thanks for the suggestion!

I'm adding my displeasure to this thread - VR is my primary way of working out, it replaced a gym membership many years ago. I cannot fathom why they would remove a basic functionality that tracks how much I've worked out. This is so antithetical to the basic product offering - fitness and gaming. For those of us who use it for fitness, move was clunky, annoying, didn't sync in my phone, wasn't available on phone for ages. These are the reasons Move wasn't popular, not because it doesn't have application. Then  there was brief period where it was available on phone, this was great. Instead of saying people didn't use it, why didn't they assess what was wrong with the app. Honestly for gaming I go to my computer, my playstation. VR is for fitness for me. This is just stupid product management. Stupid stupid stupid to have no replacement for Move.

I hope there will be a replacement app soon.

As I mentioned above, Boz said the number of users for the app does not "justify the expense of continuing to maintain and keep it going". So, unfortunately, it seems there won't be any replacement app for the time being.
