Meta Quest 3 Battery and Lamp concerns

BRUZ1
Explorer

I am a new VR user and I have two questions.

Does the meta quest 3 dock protect from overcharging? As in when the device and elite strap battery pack are full is it safe to keep the devices docked without unplugging it? Can it be docked for days as full charge without damage to the battery?

Is it safe to keep the brightness high on the headset without burning out the lamp? I am a heavy user who plays 30+ hours a week. Will the lamp be safe after a 6 months to a year of heavy use?

Hey there, @BRUZ1! You can leave your headset and controllers in the charging dock overnight; that way, they can be fully charged the next morning. It is recommended, though, that you don't leave the controllers and headset in the charging dock for a long period of time, as this can damage the battery and cause it to not play as long.

As for the display, the brightness should be good for heavy gaming for a long period of time. If there are any issues with your headset, feel free to reach out to our support team, and they would be more than happy to assist you!

Does the above also apply to the Quest 3 charging dock?

Thank you for your response.

How long is a “long” period of time? Like 12 hours or more, or 48 hours or more because “long” is a bit relative. The controllers always full charge fast but the headset takes hours to full charge with the elite strap battery pack. So 8ish hours at full charge for the controllers could happen before I unplug it in the morning. Should be fine?

If you leave everything charging overnight, like no more than 8 hours or so, that should be fine. Then you should be able to leave it off the charging dock for the day while you play sporadically. If there are ever periods where you don't use the headset for a long period of time, I recommend looking into getting a carrying case where you can store your headset and controllers until you're ready to use them again.

This is VERY disappointing and a reason for me to take back the dock. I loved the convenience of it and I figured for $130 it would incldue some anti overcharging feature...or something.
Bummer

I agree. And there’s no mention of this in the instruction manual. All I can find is the statement that the dock protects for “overheating”.. does that imply it does protect from overcharging? If not imagine thousands of uninformed people degrading there devices. This is either negligence or the support team does not have the proper information on their devices.

Could you not leave them displayed in the dock and just unplug the dock itself. Surely that wouldn't spoil the battery in any way?

Yeah Ofcourse, I do exactly that. If you’re using an elite strap battery, make sure to unplug that too or it will drain the battery for some reason.

It actually does have that built in…once full it’s only a trickle charge.

which is fine.

The problem in speaking in “technical terms” is no matter what as batteries go through charge cycles they will weaken.

so you dock it 100% of the time vs taking it off charge and 2 years later…what’s the battery difference?  Maybe 1-2% more degradation. Very negligible.

so the advice you were given, while truthful, is pretty BS.
