Meta Quest Link - Why does Hand Tracking Require Developer Mode?

I tried setting up Meta Quest Air Link on one of my clients Laptop's and Quest 3 Headset today but had an issue getting hand tracking to work while in Air Link.

I think the issue is that the Meta Account we are logged into on the Oculus App on the Laptop & Quest 3 are not in Developer Mode.

On my PC I'm logged into a Meta Account on the Oculus App with Developer Mode enabled. This gives me access to the Developer Runtime Features toggle under the Beta Settings. This option is not visible on the client's laptop.

When the toggle is on, hand tracking works in Quest Link. When it is off, hand tracking does not work. Since the option is only visible in Developer Mode I cannot enable hand tracking on the client's laptop.

My question is why has Meta set it up in this way and is there a work around?

Hi @bluetongue, thanks for reaching out to assist friends in the Meta community. We understand that the Oculus link should perform the same as it does for you. Typically, PCs are required but to troubleshoot, please confirm the following:

  • Does their laptop at least meet the requirements?
  • Does tracking work using the Quest 3 standalone?

Hi again, we're happy to assist further but have yet to hear back @bluetongue! Just wanted to confirm that your laptop met the minimum requirements? If not, feel free to let us know. Thank you!

Hi!

We are currently having a similar issue with our project.

We are developing a Windows app that includes hand tracking functionality. Everything worked fine on my computer, but when we transferred the app to a different machine, the hand tracking feature stopped working. After extensive testing, we discovered that the app requires a developer account with the "Developer Runtime Features" option enabled for hand tracking to function correctly.

However, this setting is only available in Developer Mode, which means I can't enable hand tracking on any client’s device.

My question is: Is there any way to bypass this requirement or enable the PC hand tracking features on client machines without needing to use Developer Mode?

What would you suggest in order to get the application working on client devices?

Thanks in advance!
