I was reading about Target and fake Apple gift cards. Pretty crazy stuff. As I understand it, the real cards are removed from the package and replaced with fakes. Then the crooks put the fakes back on the store shelves and when someone buys and activates them, it activates the original cards they the took out of the package. If all that is true, then my personal feeling is that it is 100% the fault of the retailer for not securing the cards, but its hard to prove. I got a fake $20 bill once in change at a grocery store, but after I left the store, how do I prove it? All you can do is stop buying gift cards.
Also, I googled "Fake Barcodes on Gift Cards". Pretty scary stuff.
