Meta quest 3 edge flickering question

Danielsan1979

The Quest 3 is my first VR device and my copy has alot of edge flickering going on and kind of blurred background graphics, its hard to describe. So there are two problems i noticed and i dont know if that is normal or not because i am a VR beginner. Ok, the camera passtrough quality is very grainy was well but thats another thing. So when i watch the red Logo during the "boot up" at the beginning i can see a certain flickering and it also looks like anti aliasing is missing because of the "staircase effect". The blurry problem happens in all games, the objects directly in front of you are super sharp and clear but objects in the distance look kind of blurred and "smeared". Its not only in games, also in when using the browser and activate the different VR rooms like Paradise etc. Whats interesting here is the edge flickering even occurs in youtube videos in the browser. Im afraid that this is not a quality issue thing, that cerstain Quest3 copies are worse than others. To bad that i dont know a person nearby with another quest3 i could test. Maybe this is all normal and i am just not used to VR because its my first VR device.

Hey @Danielsan1979! Having a flickering display as well as a grainy passthrough isn't normal. We truly know how this can definitely put a bump in your VR experience. We'd love to help you with this! Please provide the following details listed below:

  • Have you tried a factory reset? If not, click here for more information.
  • Has there been any damage to the headset? (dropped, spilled liquid, etc.)
  • If possible, please provide a screenshot of what is appearing.

We look forward to hearing back from you!

I am a VR beginnet and havent seen other quest 3 copies. My quest 3 is brand new and of course it was never dropped or spilled. A factory reset was not needed because it is brand new. In screenshots you can not see flickering, maybe from capturing video with a camera trough the lens but its hard to do. The passtrough looks not nice but again, i dont know if its normal since everybody has different opinions. The red logo during boot process have definately the staircase effect, during some YouTube Videos edge flickering is visible. Maybe i will try to capture it trough the lenses or try to get my hands on another copy for conparision. Yes, if my copy is not good it can also cause problems when i sell it in the future, maybe for a Quest 4.

Ok, i made a little video about the edge and texture flickering, staircase effects and passthrough quality (noise). Keep mind that some effects in the video are caused from the smarpthone, they are not visible in the quest 3 ! For example the black vertical lines/shadows, changes in brightness in some parts of the lens or the flickering at the end of the video during passthrough. A direct screencapture with the meta app will not show the real life, thats why the only way i have is to film it directly through the lens which is tricky. The video shows the staircase effect, in this case visible on the internal Meta Menus like the browser etc. and in the VR rooms you can choose like Paradise or the winter lodge.  It shows also edge flickering which will get stronger when you move your head. The mountain tops in the VR Room "winter lodge" are flickering. In general it looks like the unit is not on full resolution but i could be wrong. Maybe this is all normal, i honestly dont know since i am new to VR, i just want to make sure that i dont have a bad copy of the Quest 3. The video here look probably better than in real life because of the small size, if you watch it on a smartphone and also because in real life the lens is even closer to the eyes. It needs to be wachted on a computer monitor in full screen in my mind.

Hey there, @Danielsan1979. Thank you for these additional details! Even with the device being new, we definitely want to complete a factory reset to make sure there are not any changes seen on the headset. Prior to completing this action, we do recommend saving as much game progress as possible within Cloud Backup. Of course, if the display continues to appear grainy, do let us know! We'd love to gather more details via PM regarding your device to get to the bottom of this!

Greetings, I am suffering the exact same problems as described and unfortunately a factory reset hasn't worked, I have tried everything and am lost for ideas. I'm happy to cooperate and share details.

Hey there, @M52b28. Thanks for letting us know you're also experiencing this issue and your open to provide more details! We definitely want to make sure you're able to enjoy your full display, so we'd love to take a further look into your device.

While you have already attempted a factory reset without any success, we would also like to know the following:

  • Current headset software version
  • List of any additional troubleshooting completed
  • Is this seen within all areas of the headset or within certain games?
  • Are you seeing this issue within standalone or PCVR use of the device?

Once we're able to gather these details, we'll continue working with your headset. Of course, if you haven't already, we do ask that a bug report is submitted regarding this issue.

Spent hours going through and altering DebugTool and OculusTray setting by setting and testing results, still cannot get to the end of the screen tearing and horrible edges aliasing, I definitely noticed it worse at +500mb/ps encode rate, no other settings would affect the screen tearing and blue ripples asides from that, 500mbps appeared the sweet spot whilst going under made the problem worse and same for above, so I am assuming it's an encoding issue, I have HAGS turned off, OVx64Server set to maximum priority, I've updated all of my graphics drivers and USB drivers, USB Oculus test shows 2.9gbps of transfer speed and there have been a few other trouble shoots I have taken but off the top of my head I cannot remember, also my native resolution is 2k 1440p with SDR colour.

I only ever use the Link cable but it is underutilized as I have a powerful Ryzen CPU and a 3080gpu that is surely more than capable of encoding 500mbps but it just simply will not play ball, Quest for me is unplayable on PCVR, I have reinstalled the Oculus Software also to no avail.

I only notice this on PCVR / Desktop, not on Standalone thankfully, and also it's the same no matter what game/steam game through Link I start, no matter what resolution or fidelity setting I run it still has trouble, I'm using an Oculus dedicated Link Cable supplied by yourselves.

We truly appreciate these details and the time you've taken to work with the PC app and its settings! So that we can take a closer look into how our software is communicating with your PC, we would like for you to send us a PM.
