I'm kinda reshearcing this topic as I'm planning to buy a Quest 3 this week. I've read so many posts now I'm kinda loss and would like a definitive answer.
So I have a Oculus CV1. Even though it's old - it still works and doesn't have any artifacts or compressions as it's plugged in directly to the HDMI port.
Now, I really don't care about Quest being wireless. I just want to experience the upgraded visuals but don't want to buy additional 5 ghz modems and wi-fi 6 routers and all that stuff (for now). I'm used to my headset being wired.
Now my question is, if I use Quest 3 with the Link cable plugged in to my usb 3.2 mobo (good cable with a bulit-in power supply) will I get these lags, compressions and artifacts? Will the image be clear like my CV1? Thanks in advance.
My specs:
Core i7 12700k
4070ti Super 16gb VRAM
64GB DDR4 RAM
My mobo supports usb 3.2

It's a compressed video stream so yes, there will be compression artifacts and controller latency. The image is likely to be way better than the CV1 though, simply because it's much higher resolution and the Q3 has dramatically better optics.

Thanks for the response.
Does a good quality link cable provide better or worse image quality compared to a wireless setup? If I don't care about the wireless gameplay, is there any reason for me to invest into these additional modems and routers?

@mookie17 I have both headsets and as long as I use the official link cable connected to my z790mb usb3.2 gen2 type-c port, and at least 500mbps encoding bitrate, I don’t see any noticeable compression artifacts. Distant objects clarity and 7-10ms lower latency are always a bit better than I can achieve wireless (air link or Virtual Desktop) with my very good wifi6 setup. Also, my mb keeps my headset at +85% for a very long time (+6hrs). Wireless PCVR is still a lot of fun and I use this for lots of games. However, for complex flight sims like msfs2020, using a link cable is still my go to option.

I agree with both the above responses, the image is just so much better with the Quest 3, compression or not. As for cables, I’ve used the £17 USB 3 cables from Amazon and the official Link cable - both perfectly ok but if possible I’d go for official mainly because it’s thinner and lighter.
