(Not Resolved) Known Issue - Quest PCVR streaming micro lags and stutter esp. when moving head

Hi team,

I'm getting micro lags and stutter in Airlink on my Quest 3 (EU/UK), esp. when moving my head. In the Oculus debug overlay this causes brief spikes in transmit/decode, fps drops and visible stuttering. The issue is not present on my Quest Pro with otherwise identical settings - see below screenshots to illustrate.

Few more details:
- Issue is not present on Quest Pro with same settings on HMD, router and PC (using same res)
- Issue is worse at higher bitrates, esp. >200mbps, but still present <200mbps
- Issue is unrelated to PC/game latencies (CPU, GPU, Queue each <5ms)
- Stutters/lags are intermittent (every 10-20 seconds) when not moving but happen immediately and reproducibly when moving the head to either side or especially looking downwards (i.e. on any bigger headset movements)
- Wifi 6E router (TP Link AXE75 EU/UK)
- EDIT: exact same issue with Asus RT-AXE7800 (EU/UK) wifi 6e router
- Connection shows as 2,400mbps
- Airlink codec H264 (but same on other codecs)
- I've attempted factory resetting, installing latest drivers
- Updated to v62 and latest Quest Link desktop version (I can see the 120hz option for my Q3)
- EDIT: Ordered a separate Quest 3 for testing: presents the exact same issue

-EDIT: Same issue on 5ghz 802.11ax 160mhz BUT switching to 802.11ac (!) completely fixed the issue. I cant test this on 6ghz but looks like 802.11ax or something related to how q3 implements it is the culprit

As the issue is worse the higher the bitrate and not present on Q Pro with otherwise same settings, I suspect it's related to the below known Wifi issues - but opening a new thread as instructed.

Best,
JensQ3Q3QProQPro

Updates:
- Tried separate router: exact same issue with Asus RT-AXE7800 wifi 6e router
- Ordered a separate Quest 3: exact same issue on both routers

-Same issue on 5ghz 802.11ax 160mhz BUT switching to 802.11ac (!) completely fixed the issue. I cant test this on 6ghz but looks like 802.11ax or something related to how q3 implements it is the culprit

same issue now after updating to V62 on VD

As You saw WiFi thread problem, probably is same issue. Try use 5GHz. Some users have that micro spikes, some not. Even on 5GHz. Me have, but not that often. And it's not a router problem because it's only dedicated to  quest 3.

Other thing. Maybe You have WiFi interference with neighbors and change WiFi channel help some users.

Unortunately I have the same issue. I have nearly an identical setup, brand new Wi-Fi 6 router, a recently upgraded high-powered PC and I'm getting stuttering when I'm moving my headset within airlink or virtual desktop.

I have tried multiple different settings in my router such as channels, frequency and Wi-Fi type, but no improvements.

It seems META is putting their head in the sand with this one and ignoring the issue.

I don't think it is any interference and i am already using 5GHz, its less frequent the lower the bitrate but still even there at as low as 30Mbps bitrate,  I think the thing that annoys me the most while using VD is the mic becoming really delayed each time cause I play games with friends on discord and then I end up speaking over them

Yea i really hope they see this and do something about it, its driving me nuts cause I don't want to have wasted $500 on a new headset and I don't really want to switch back to my quest 2 cause the controllers are super busted and the headset itself is also a little busted, I've tried Air link which was way worse than Virtual desktop for me and I also even tried the new steam link which was also quite crappy.

I'm experiencing the same issue: Quest 3 on v62 (120hz) connected via 6e to an AXE75 (US), performance overlay shows easily reproducible xfer spikes upon head movement or large scene change. Bitrate reduction only helps slightly. Issue manifests as visible stuttering during gameplay.  All involved devices fully updated.  CPU/GPU load and other latencies are low.

With both my QPro and Q3 I get the best results with Air Link using 200mbps Dynamic bitrate (set on Rift home dashboard far left icon).  All ODT settings default/zeros except distortion = Low.  This uses hevc (h265) and I've found this looks best and has the lowest latency.  Also less stutters, esp. with SteamVR apps.  Also, I prefer 80Hz refresh rate since I can't tell the difference between it and 90Hz, plus it gives my games a little more headroom.  If I drop this down to 72Hz I can start to see a little blurring/ghosting with fast racing sims.

Nvidia control panel global 3d settings all defaults except Power = prefer max performance and change the Quality default below that to High Performance.

I've found this gives me as good-as what I can get using Virtual Desktop, maybe a little smoother with Air Link, for me anyway.

For flight and racing sims I often use my official Link cable with ODT encoding bitrate set to 500-650mbps,  This automatically uses h264 btw.  I get about 7-10ms less latency and a little better distance clarity compared to Air Link.  Anything higher than 450mbps results in no significant artifacts.  Anything much higher than 700mbps and I start to get the odd audio stutter and higher latency.

Anyway, this all works great with both my QPro and Q3.  Probably helps that my PC specs are pretty high = i913900k/rtx4090/32Gb 6400ram.  Pretty standard 1gig router, ethernet wired to my PC, with dedicated 5Ghz wifi (ch36/80mhz) 2-3m away from my play areas.  Also, only 5Ghz user with the rest kicked to 2.4 with band steering disabled.

i9 13900K water cooled, RTX4090, Z790 MB w/wifi6e, 32Gb 6400 ram, 2x2TB SSD, 1000W PSU, Win 11, QPro, Q3, w/Link and Air Link, Vive Pro1 with 2x2.0 base stations, Etsy lens mod and Index Controllers

1) Check if VD refresh rate match with Oculus app refresh rate. For example, if in Oculus app You will set 75Hz and in VD You will select different value like 90/120Hz then You will see lags like effect (de-sync in frames). VD overlay will show it as network latency.

2) Do You use any kind of VPN? Mine VPN create network latency spikes from 30 to 200ms every 2-4 and I need to disable VPN or add VD as exception in VPN settings.

I have the same issue with encoder frame drops / lag spikes on Airlink.

My specs:

Quest3

i9-9900K

32gb RAM

3080 graphics card

Wifi signal strength is consistent at 1200mbps.

I have a dedicated 5Ghz wifi on 80mhz channel width. The router is ASUS RT-AX53U. No other device use the same network. I've checked for channel interference but that's not the issue either since it is the only wifi network on that channel. Router is in the same room.

I don't have this issue on wired link.

I didn't have this issue until v62 rolled out.
