Oculus Go: Failed Entitlement Check

As the title says. Recently I get this message, "Failed Entitlement Check" when I launch the app Virtual Desktop Streamer.  I have owned the app for years.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the App

Factory reset the The Oculus

Even Launched the app from the phone app

All with the same results.

I have also noticed that the app store will not load on the Oculus. It looks like it tries to start but then shuts down right away.

I realize this is a very old device but any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Arguing the semantics and details of how the shutoff happened isn't exactly helpful or productive. And expecting anyone to have sympathy and patience for a multi-billion dollar company with nearly unlimited resources is a ridiculous expectation. Especially when they have failed to solve this issue in over two months despite a torrent of feedback by irate consumers.

At the end of the day, the facts are that our purchases are now unusable, and it's fairly clear that nobody working at Meta has any interest in addressing this issue.

"At the end of the day, the facts are that our purchases are now unusable, and it's fairly clear that nobody working at Meta has any interest in addressing this issue."

Which is all I have been saying.  😉

As for talking about how and what might have happened, sorry, I'm a tech type and that type of stuff interests me.

I am sorry it bothers you and you don't feel it is productive.  Telling me it isn't productive probably won't be very productive tho, as that is just who I am.  😉

Also, I never intended or expected anyone to have sympathy and/or patience.  I'm a realist so I don't expect Meta to do any different.  There should be no sympathy.  I think (and I have stated it multiple times) that Meta handled this pretty badly.  And as for patience, as I've said again multiple times, I don't expect Meta to do anything about it, I don't see why anyone should be patient.

I think it's funny sometimes when someone says they aren't surprised when a big company does something bad, and others think that means they are somehow trying to defend that company...  That's kind of weird.
I think people sometimes are just upset that everyone isn't as angry as they are.  As a realist (or at least I think I am), I didn't get angry when it happened because I am not surprised because they are a company who no longer cares about this market.
It's not going to make a difference (IMHO), so I don't see any need for anger.  But again, that's me.

I am having this problem too. It doesn’t make any sense that games that were already downloaded and playing fine are now failing because of something they did software or server wise. As others have said the fact that they have deprecated the product does NOT mean they can just remove people’s access to things they had paid for and were already downloaded.  Honestly sounds like a class action lawsuit in the making as this is not an old device dying related thing but something they changed to cause everyone to no longer have access to things that were working. It’s akin to Nintendo coming into your house and breaking all your Wii game CDs that you bought because the “Wii is no longer supported”. If the device still works the games that were already working on it should too.

It is very bad customer service from Meta that the Oculus go os no longer supported. This device is now useless and destined for a landfill somewhere. I can assure you that I personally will be abandoning the VR concept and will actively discourage anyone who will listen to do the same. This device was expensive to purchase and has been cared for. It has been kept in its original packaging when not in use. It's as good as new. However the device is completely useless to me and millions of others. META's attitude is "just by something new", but why should consumers trust you?

Well said. I feel the same way.

I have 2 go headsets, I stayed logged into one of them as the other was under a different account for my grandson. The one I wasn't logged into was not affected. All of those games still play and some of the games are on both headsets. So whatever Meta did it only affected the headsets that were logged into.

I have definitely noticed the store is still open to the go. I recently purchased a game and was able to play it. Not sure if it is still working now though.

All headsets need to be tied to accounts when set up initially, so I'm not totally sure what you mean by "logged into" in this situation.

It appears that what Meta did was disable some backend services, so it would be interesting to see what is different about that one that is still working...
Is it not on WiFi?

I suppose that could come down to what you mean by recently?

All of this is somewhat recent.

The Go Store itself is "mostly" gone now.  You can't get to it from the headset.  You can't select Oculus Go Experiences on their website.  So it is at least "mostly" gone now.

By mostly, I mean that even tho you can't go "to the Go Store" anymore, if I search on my headset for a specific title (not in the Store, as I said that no longer works) I can sometimes still find it and it will allow me to buy it.
I would imagine that might be the same if they have an app on the HOME screen (which is still up).

As I mentioned in this or another thread, I was able to "buy" a new table for Pinball FX2 even tho without patching (which I know Meta doesn't support), that game won't work anymore.

So part of the store stuff for the Go is still working, even tho the unit itself is basically not for the users, which is pretty terrible customer service wise.

I'm disappointed, but not surprised, that the Entitlement Check thing is baked in and app eventually stop working.  I'm cynical that way.  But the way this has been handled.
Just stopped working for a lot of people without a heads up.  Yes, we knew that the Go was no longer supported, but we didn't know the apps would stop.
And the fact that the store has recently, and still is in some situations, been allowing people to buy things that were about to stop working or won't work???  That's not a good look.
And I think it's totally fair, based on the way Meta has handled this, basically saying it's not supported so too bad, that everyone should think this is how they will handle support on all of their products.

I already own a Go and a Quest 2, and I love the tech, but this does make me think I probably won't buy future Meta hardware...  We are lucky that there are people who have developed a patch to allow us to use Go apps if we want to go that route (many won't).  But even that will only work while the Go is still running.  Once you factory reset, you still need the Meta app to reset it up.  I see that going away too, so at some point in time, there will be no way to keep these (and I'm sure their Quest line also) going...

Funny timing, I just saw an article on Forbes about the Quest 2 looking to possibly being slow rolled out.
And they mentioned the Quest 1 support ending, and they posted this quote from Meta on the Quest 1:

“You will still be able to download new apps and continue using your existing apps as long as they are supported by the developer. However, if any security vulnerabilities are discovered in the future, private data that is directly stored on the device or accessible from it would be at risk of compromise,” Meta said in a statement.

Does that sound familiar?  😉  So this is going to happen to the Quest 1 eventually too, and I think eventually all Meta devices.
