My son's Oculus Quest 2 gets extremely hot when charging, to the extent that smoke appeared, the casing around the charging point has melted a little and I stupidly burned my thumb on the charger. Yes, I shouldn't have touched the metal but I did!
Any advice on how to remedy this issue? One day it was fine, the next it wasn't.

If it's overheating to the extent of melting the plastic around the charging port, the port must be worn out. If the headet is under warranty you should send it back for replacement. If it isn't, it's possible to replace the charging port but it'll take quite a bit of electronics skill to complete.
Don't plug it in until it's fixed or replaced though - it's a fire hazard.

Definitely contact support about this ASAP. In the meantime, I agree with @user_901925786032222 — don't plug it in until you discuss the situation with support.
You can contact support by clicking the "Send a Message" button here.
Other people have had the same problem. If your headset is out of warranty, Meta may send you a refurbished unit as a replacement.
Good luck and be careful!

Happened to me today. I am not using the official charger as it is too old now but it was turned off when it happened. It is still working at 27% battery but I turned it off for now and waiting for support to respond. My warranty expired 18 months ago. I hope they fix this for free. Thank you!
