Hi,
my Oculus Quest had an old version (January 2020) and was unable to carry out a software update. I followed instructions and eventually performed a factory reset. Now it shows a banner of the oculus app for smartphones.
Leaving the Oculus Quest powered, and from the smartphone, the oculus app finds it, but is not able to pair with it. I'm stuck there. What shall I do?
Moreover, I do miss the possibility to do a SW update via USB, as with other devices. This procedure would be more reliable.

I had this issue too, but I was able to fix it.
I got into the situation because I had my quest 2 paired with my meta quest app on my phone and I decided I needed a factory reset of the quest. So I reset it. Then after everything came back up I got stuck at the screen with numbers telling me to enter them in the quest app.
On my meta quest app the quest still showed up, but was "not connected". There was no way to pair that one so I tried adding another device and that allowed me to enter the numbers but then game be the error about not being able to pair. I tried powering down/up the quest and my phone but still got the same thing.
I finally uninstalled the meta quest app from my phone and then reinstalled it. It then saw the device like before and told me it was not connected but the quest was still stuck at the numbers screen. So I decided to add another quest device again and this time it worked. The quest shows as connected and I was able to get past the numbers screen.

This is happening to me too and I’m sad thinking that I probably won’t be able to play oculus again

I've tried lots of things. One thing that has seemed to work regularly is to try to pair it with ANOTHER account. You can then factory reset it again and use the correct account.
I do these quickly as part of my job at our nonprofit, so I apologize for not having detailed instructions.
Best of luck.

Try using the Oculus Developer Hub to get past the pairing issue. May or may not fix pairing to your device but it will at least get the Quest 2 functional
https://developer.oculus.com/downloads/package/oculus-developer-hub-win/
Install on a computer that has Bluetooth and before/after installation log into your Meta account.
While Quest 2 is on the 5 digit pairing screen, plug in the Quest 2 and have Developer Hub detect.
