Oculus Rift CV1 no video on RX 7600 XT

I've had my Oculus CV1 for the better part of 4 years now, recently my graphics card died, so I replaced it with a RX7600XT (12GB), and upon reinstalling the oculus software, and plugging my headset in, everything software-wise seems perfectly fine, the Oculus software recognizes it, the SteamVR software recognizes it, however the oculus itself displays no video whatsoever, the oculus looks as if it's turned off, it's not a blank screen, it's a black one.

The proximity sensor inside the headset seems to be working just fine, other than the fact that the LED is orange when nothing is close to it, upon putting my finger in front of it to test it, it goes off (signaling something is in range), then on again, with a white color, changing quickly to orange, and staying that way until i put something in range again.

I searched around online, and learned of the existance of a whitelist, which features the compatible graphics cards, and it seems mine isn't on there, not entirely sure why, seeing as how there are two other cards that seem to be of the 7000 series of amd graphics cards, I've tried adding my own, as follows:

{
  "Name": "Radeon RX 7600-XT",
  "Vendor": "AMD",
  "PID": "7480",
  "SubsysVID": "Any",
  "MinVRamMb": 12288
}

Here are some other things i've tried:

Reseating the cables, both the one that goes on the headset, and the other end of it, that goes into the graphics card

Re-installing the oculus software all together

Restarted my computer (several times, mostly out of desperation)

But it seems that my experimenting wielded no results so far, therefore i'm posting here in hopes that someone might be able to help

I'd like to add that opening the vr view in steamvr shows what i would see in the headset perfectly, tracking matches, everything on that window is perfetly fine, except the fact that in the headset itself, there's nothing

You may want to go to the AMD user forum and see if others have found a workaround.  I don't really know because I use a nvidia rtx4090 gpu but I think that some AMD graphics drivers are more PCVR friendly than others.  Good luck mate and cheers.

Hey @White_Raccoon! We're happy to provide some insight to you here and hopefully help. First, just to set expectations, the RX 7000 series is not a supported graphics card. So while it may work, we can't guarantee it will. With that said, here's some things you can try if your screen is black. The first one is more so if you're using a virtual desktop but these are the only steps we have to provide.

To fix this, players need to ensure Oculus\Support\oculus-runtime\OVRServer_x64.exe is using the same graphics device as their 2D Desktop. To fix this:

  1. Go to Windows Settings > System  > Display > Graphics Settings
  2. Click Graphics performance preference
  3. Click Choose an app to set preference > Desktop app
  4. Locate your OVRServer_x64.exe. By default, this will be located as follows:C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-runtime\OVRServer_x64.exe
  5. Click Add
  6. Set this to Power Saving then close the settings menu and click Save
    • If this does not work or is already the setting selected, Performance Mode can be tried instead
  7. Reset the computer and test VR Desktop

If these steps have been followed and they did not resolve the issue, please ensure the following:

  • Have them navigate back to the Graphics performance preference and ensure OVRServer_x64.exe is still listed. If not, the setting was not saved.
    • Ensure they clicked Save and closed the settings window before resetting their computer.

  • If the OVRServer_x64.exe is still listed, try switching this to Performance Mode rather than Power Saving.

  • If this still does not work, follow these steps:
    1. Open Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics Settings
    2. Select Classic App from the drop down and click Browse
    3. Select the OVRServer_x64.exe
    4. Click Options > Power Saver > Save
      Ensure the "Power Saver" option has the integrated graphics device at the top of this menu.

Making sure your OS is up to date can help. Generally we'd suggest making sure your graphics driver is up to date as well, but it seems you're exploring options for using other drivers. Ultimately, the black screen is an indicator of the GPU not being supported. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello, following these steps did not fix my issue, i'd also like to point out the options on said dropdown are as my screenshot shows, therefore, the second way of fixing the issue, is not replicable.

I would also like to point out that I tried opening the "Oculus Touch Basics" app, and looking at my monitor, it shows what i should be seeing, my head movements correspond perfectly on the monitor, but the Oculus itself is still off

I have considered purchasing the Meta Quest 3 as a replacement, but my recent graphics card upgrade was specifically for VR purposes. Given that this issue may be software-related, and considering the vague "Not supported" message without any further clarification regarding my graphics card, I'm hesitant to invest in another costly Meta product. The possibility of encountering the same unsupported issue is too significant. Without a clear explanation for why my particular graphics card is unsupported, I will refrain from buying any further Meta products and will explore alternatives from other competitors.

I understand that the Meta Quest 3 operates independently of a separate computer. However, using a computer with Air Link or the Link Cable significantly enhances the experience. The lack of explanation regarding why my relatively modern graphics card is incompatible makes it too financially risky to proceed with a purchase.

Hey again @White_Raccoon. Thank you for the follow up! Sorry if the response wasn't clear. The unsupported graphics card mention was also a hyper link which leads to the Quest Link System Requirements. It lists out the graphics cards which are supported and some that are unsupported on that page. Any that are not listed there should be considered unsupported. When hardware is unsupported, while it can work with the our software, the development and updates to the Oculus PC App are made with the intention of optimizing towards the supported hardware. As updates are made the supported hardware can expand. For the time being the RX 7,000 series is unsupported. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

I understand that the hyperlink provided leads to a list of hardware supported by Oculus Link. However, I own an Oculus Rift CV1, which does not feature Oculus Link (which I assume is the software used to link a Quest device with a computer wirelessly). As a result, I disregarded that list.

As an experienced programmer, I am interested in knowing if there are any file modifications I can make. I have come across suggestions online where some users managed to get their unsupported graphics cards to work by adding their card parameters to a whitelist.

I am deeply disappointed in the company for not providing a clear explanation of why my graphics card is unsupported. It appears that this restriction might be artificially imposed through software. Any app that shows on the monitor what should appear in the headset suggests that my computer is rendering the visuals correctly. If my computer can render these visuals, the headset should be able to display them as well.

I am willing to take any risks necessary to avoid rendering my headset useless due to the unsupported status of my graphics card. I would appreciate a detailed technical explanation of why my graphics card is unsupported so I can explore potential solutions. There is no need for layman's terms. Please provide the technical specifics.
