Oculus Rift CV1 randomly rebooting

Last week everything was working fine. This week, however, the Rift is acting weird. Sometimes I can play without problems, but other times, it reboots constantly. I start a game and after a few minutes, the screen turns black, and after a second it shows the Oculus logo. Then the image returns. This "crash" only seems to happen when I'm playing something, not inside the Oculus Dash Home. Also, sometimes (not always) this problem makes the app crash too. Today I was playing Far Beyond: Space Odyssey, and after rebooting, the game crashed, with an error saying something about running out of memory. This never happened before. Yesterday I was playing the same game, and suddenly the screen turned black. After leaving VR I noticed my monitor was in power saving mode, and I couldn't wake it up, like if my VGA turned off. It doesn't seem to be related to the cable, my Monoprice extension cables are pretty new, and they are tightly attached. I don't know if this is a Rift problem, or my VGA is dying (it has less than a year of use). Is there a way to troubleshoot this? These are my specs:

ASUS GForce GTX1070 8GB
Intel i7 7700 non-k
DDR4 16GB RAM
3 Oculus Rift Sensors
Oculus Rift CV1 headset with Monoprice extension cables (the recommended ones)
3 SATA HDD
PSU Sentei 725W, no 80+ certification

This started happening after I installed an extra HDD on my PC, but I think it's just a coincidence. I thought it could be a power problem, but after removing one of the HDD, the problem persisted.

How much ram and vram are you using?   What are your GPU temps? It sounds like maybe your video card is crashing.  First thing might be to try reinstalling your video card drivers.  Are you using oculus tray tool or similar to increase your super sampling?  Try dropping that back to take some load off your GPU.

Hi @MaxShadow09,

There could be a few different reasons as to why you're encountering this issue. As TwoHedWlf had mentioned, ensuring that you're using the latest graphics drivers is always a good step to take. You'll be able to grab that here: https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx

Another step that you could try would be to have your Rift plugged directly into your computer, rather than using the Monoprice extension cables just so we can take those out of the equation.

If that doesn't work either, please grab your Oculus Diagnostic logs using these steps: https://support.oculus.com/172672339980954/ and create a ticket with us having them attached so we can look further into this with you!

Thanks, -Aidan

I think the problem was the VGA. because the rebooting happened with other non-vr games too. I noticed the card wasn't screwed. My case has a weird border on the back that won't let me connect my HDMIs if the VGA is on the top slot, and that's the only slot I can plug it into. I removed the VGA, cleaned it up, and reconnected it, but this time I screwed it. It's not perfectly straight but at least it's not loose. I think when I connected my third HDD, I accidentally moved the VGA, or the power connector, and that was making it restart randomly. I'll update the reply if it reboots again, but it's been working fine these days. Thanks for the help.

EDIT: Well no, the VGA keeps crashing. Today I put the headset on and it crashes a minute later, turning off my monitor, forcing me to restart the PC. Playing SkyrimVR or FalloutVR makes Oculus Service and SteamVR crash, or the game crashes without error. It doesn't seem to be overheating, it must be something else. Could it be that my PSU is failing to give enough power to the Video Card? It's weird, it was working fine a week ago. I've attached a screenshot of HWInfo with my peak video card values after the crash, temp is fine. I'll update my drivers, but I doubt that's the problem, it seems to be hardware related. By the way, I'm not using Oculus Tray Tool, or any other software related to VR. I'll attach the logs later.

Little update. I downloaded Aida64 and did a stability test. I checked all the options except Stress CPU and Stress Hard Drives. When the GPU Stress test started, the video card temp didn't go over 69°. That's normal I guess. However, the CPU temp got peaks over 100°, and Aida reported it was throttling due to overheating. Is that normal? Such high temps in a GPU stress test?

Nope, that's not normal, check your CPU heat sink isn't clogged, fan is working.  If that's fine you might need to pull the heat sink off and check the thermal paste and reseat it.
