Oculus Rift (Refurbished) Replacement - Tell me your experiences?

Hey All,

I have a replacement rift incoming for a cable socket issue where the HMD would lose connection most of the time you touch the HMD or adjust it on  your face during play, I could even induce this problem just by holding the unit and slightly twisting or squeezing it.

Looks like the replacement I am getting will indeed be a refurb since it says as much on the order status page for the replacement.

I have read some horror stories around the place of getting refurbs that are scratched and scuffed etc...

I want to hear some good experiences from any of you guys who have refurb replacements and it all went well, what was the condition of the unit etc?

I had a 2016 rift (My second actually, the first had the SAME issue as this one I just sent back), with the older style facial interface, I am hoping this replacement has at least a NEW outer shell and lenses, and I don't want to have headphone issues which I keep reading about on here...

Someone like Apple, those refurbs look identical to new, and are generally very good, hoping Oculus is in the same boat, but not from what I have read.

A bit worried to be honest. I didn't treat my rift badly at all, I was
super careful with it always, I didn't wrench on the head-strap when
putting it on, I really hope the unit I get is not one which was treated
badly by its previous owner, which brings me to my main concern...

Do we know what is actually replaced on refurbs in the process of sending them out? Do they haver new shells, new lenses etc?

In my 2+ years i havent seen a single post of someone complaining about a refurb unit, not that that counts much, but atleast i guess it shows theres no common problem with damaged refurbs. Im in the process of getting a refurb aswell, opposed toi you i look pretty much forward to it 😉

The refurbs from Oculus are virtually identical to brand new ... apparently ... true story as they use a company that specialises in such and I remember a year or so back reading a long story about that company and why Oculus uses them for refurbishments.  I cannot remember the name but somebody here surely will ... or Cybereality with know !?

Hi i have a refurb headset and i was really pleased with it , looked almost brand new , new face plate (its the one from the original) but I had that one before anyway.

New headphones.

No scratches or scuffs anywhere,  the only small issue i had was the lenses looked liked they had been cleaned with a wet wipe and were covered in dry liquid, was a bit of a job cleaning it off but after they look like new and no problems with them.

The head straps do have fold lines on, on the bits that stick to the Velcro but that's the only negative, the rest of the head straps and headset look like new.

It has a new HDMI cable.

It pretty much seamed like a new headset and I have been using a few months now and all is good.

Hope that helps.

What is the warranty? In the United Kingdom, it's 2 years on a new one..

On paper according to Oculus its 1yr in Australia, but since they are technically an Australian Entity as they quoted an ABN number on my receipt, Australian Consumer Laws on a device like this gives me 2 years based on its expected life and price. So, I think in the end despite not having to pull out the big guns, they knew this.

Well.. Got my refurb, amazingly fast shipping once they sent it.

Happy to report it works perfectly here. No issues at all.

Condition was very good, no protective film on the lenses, but thankfully they are very clean and essentially look new. The cable though was very used, you could tell it had been twisted around a lot, thankfully I KEPT my cable (You DO NOT have to send back your cable if you are getting an HMD replacement) so now I actually have three cables, just used one of my good ones.

The headphones, I swear they may be slightly less good sounding, a little less bass than I remember and more cheap sounding, not sure if Oculus has gone to a slightly cheaper headphone driver since 2016, to be honest, I don't mind because the lenses, the displays, they all work flawlessly so far, perfect clean pitch black screens when the display goes dark and no HDMI disconnections at all, though I am not pushing my luck with it.

Good to be back in VR again, and good to know this unit has 90 days warranty so I plan to use it quite a bit in that time to make sure this works ok...

Thanks all, good experience here!

Got a refurbished CV1 a year ago, worked great with only a small scrape on the side. Wore it for 3 hours playing robo recall and got really sweaty so I took it off, at which point I found something stuck to my forhead. It was a band-aid with hairs stuck to it, some of the sweat from that area rolled into my mouth.
This horror story was completely fictional and the names and dates were changed to protect the innocent.

I had one last 11 months.  And nother last 2 months.  Both had the right ear audio issue.
