Oculus Rift S black screen crashes and static noise

Oculus Rift S. Oculus Rift S black screen crashes and static noise.

Just started recently, I have had the VR for a few years.

Fly IL-2 and DCS.

It crashes, goes black and makes horrible static. I use Task manager (Windows 11) and go to desktop and click back on the game (simulator that is still running). It crashes again in a few minutes.

Win11

Asus Strix 790-H, Intel 13900 CPU. Nivida RTX 2080-ti video. 64 GB Ram.  SSD memory.

all the latest drivers.

no OverClocking.

I have researched the Internet for this problem and there seems to be no fix, just people trying lots of things.

I know that the VR is old and long out of warranty and no one cares, as far as Meta.

Anyone think of anything to fix it. I am old and do not abuse the computer.

Thanx.

Howdy there. @SSPalmer! We fully realize that you're having some issues with your Rift S, and we know how this may be affecting your VR experience, so we'd want to step in and assist you in getting back into the VR world. We'd like to provide you with some suggestions that we know that have come in handy past.

  • Try reseating the cable on both the headset side and the side that plugs into the GPU and inspect it for damage such as bent pins, frays, twists, kinks, etc.
Note: For the Rift and Rift S, customers should plug in the USB 3.0 cable first, then the display cable to the graphics card.
  • Rift/Link does not support the use of multiple dedicated graphics cards. If you have a CrossFire or an SLI configuration, please remove one of the graphics cards. The headset and primary monitor must be connected to the same dedicated graphics card.
  • Although some graphics cards can support multiple monitors, the Rift/Link can potentially experience issues if more than one monitor is connected. The only fully supported configuration is to have the headset and one monitor plugged in. If you are using 2 or more monitors or displays of any kind, please unplug the extras.

Please let us know how it goes so we can determine if any additional steps are required!

OK, so I have been running a New computer (Asus Z790 with 13900 CPU, Nvidia 2080-ti, 64 GB Ram, 850 Watt PSU) with the Oculus Rift S, and it often Jumps to Desktop while I am flying. It is stilling running, but I am looking a back screen, and have to switch to desktop with the Taskbar. I then have to click on the game and it comes back the game in progress. The happens in both IL-2 and DCS. VR is on the USB cable to the USB 3 one the new computer I installed several months ago. Is it a different issue than those who have it just go black? Mine is still in the game, but goes black and I have to use taskbar on desktop to return to game in VR of course. I can fly an hour or two before it happens, or it might happen more often, or not for hours.

sometimes when I fly il-2 or dcs, it goes black and have t go back into desktop and click on the flight sim, still going, to go back to the sim. No clue why it does it... I am not using the VR hand controllers, I am using Joystick. I stopped using SteamVR and use Opencomposite. SteamVR was horrible for use with VR!! I do not use any Steam games to fly.

Hi hi @SSPalmer! Thank you for reaching out to us in regards to this matter. We want to ensure all our users have the smoothest PCVR experience possible at all times. With that being said, we aren't really able to troubleshoot Opencomposite since that's not our software. You can get better assistance directly from their Discord by clicking here. We hope this helps! Have a wonderful rest of your day!

it is not often, used to be much more often, but has become much less often. one thing that really really helped was not using SteamVR. Only using Opencomposite. SteamVR is horrific.
