Oculus Rift games crash on Quest 3

PattyIce87

Recently purchased a Meta Quest 3 and set up Steam Link and Air Link. Some games randomly crash or don't even start, throwing me back to the Oculus menu. Games such as Dead and Buried, Brass Tactics Arena, and Robo Recall do not work. Dead and Buried/Brass Tactics launch and then crash. Robo Recall loads, begins play, and then randomly crashes. Zero Caliber is the only game so far I have had success with from my original Oculus library on the Quest 3 headset. Errors from event viewer below:

Good evening

I did some researching of the issue and found a workaround via the following from Intel:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/developer/articles/troubleshooting/openssl-sha-crash-bug-req...

I came across it originally by finding the article below which took me down a rabbit hole of a few links before hitting the Intel page:

https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/kuf359/brass_tactics_arena_keeps_crashing_with_oculus/

Since I have a 13th gen CPU, I fell into the category of chip to experience this OpenSSL bug. While the bug was patched years ago, any software/games that have not patched this bug are still vulnerable to it (in this case, Robo Recall, Brass Tactics, and Dead & Buried). This was never a Quest/Oculus problem rather a developer/software patching one.

The workaround involves creating an environment variable. Steps taken are as follows:

  1. Navigate to Control Panel
  2. Launch System (System and Security if sorted by category)
  3. Click 'Advanced system settings' from the 'Related settings' menu on the right
  4. With 'System Properties' window open, I clicked 'Environment Variables'
  5. Under 'System Variables', I clicked 'New' to create a new variable.
  6. Created a variable name of OPENSSL_ia32cap with a variable value of ~0x20000000
  7. Clicked 'OK' twice to get back out of 'Environment Variables'
  8. For good measure, I rebooted my machine.
  9. Launched Oculus/Meta app and then did Air Link from Quest 3
  10. Tested all games in question

I am happy to report that this workaround worked flawlessly and I was able to play all three without a single crash.

As far as I am concerned, this post can be marked closed after you review and I'd honestly recommend pinning somewhere for future reference.

Hey there we know it can be frustrating to have some of your games crash on you. Can you please lets us know if this is just happening to games from steam or from our rift store as well? This will give us a better insight on what might be happening.

Good evening

The games referenced are in my Oculus library (I received a few of them with my original Oculus CV1 headset back in 2019). I initiate air link to my PC over WiFi (I have 1gig fiber internet with an Asus ROG Rapture GT-AC5300 tri-band wireless router) and then launch the games mentioned above. I have tried compatibility settings so far to just run the .exe for each game as administrator but that did not fix the issue.

Hey there, @PattyIce87, and thanks for reaching out with this issue! There can be a few different causes for the type of symptoms that you're seeing, so we're lucky we can cover a ton of ground by performing a few easy steps. First, a few questions:

You're seeing these issues trying to connect via Air Link, but are you seeing the same when using the Link cable?

Are these the original installations of these games, or is this all a brand new upgrade, PC included?

Are you seeing any issues with any newer PCVR games under Air Link?

To hopefully eliminate any file let's try to run a repair on the PC app to make certain we're not seeing any file version/mismatch/missing issues:

  • Download and run the Oculus Installation Software (meta.com/quest/setup/)
  • You will see a screen which says "Already Installed".
  • Click the "Repair" option, and confirm again on the next screen.

If the troubles persist past the repair, try to uninstall and reinstall the application using Add or Remove Programs, and if the problems still persist, we can try a manual reinstall as well:

  • Disconnect the Rift/Link cable from the computer
  • Disconnect your computer from the internet
  • Backup any necessary content
  • Reboot into Safe Mode
  • Uninstall the Oculus PC app using the Control Panel
  • Delete all Oculus folders from the following folder:
    • C:\Program Files
  • Remove any Oculus folders from the following locations:
    • C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData
    • C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData\Local
    • C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData\LocalLow
    • C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData\Roaming
    • C:\OculusSetup-DownloadCache
    • Note: The AppData folder is usually hidden. Use these steps to access AppData.
      • Press Windows key + R to launch the Run dialog window.
      • Type %AppData% in the Run box and click OK or press Enter
      • File Explorer will launch to the AppData\Roaming subfolder.
      • Click AppData in the File Explorer address bar to show all three subfolders in the AppData location.
  • Restart your computer in normal mode
  • Reconnect your computer to the internet
  • Install the Oculus PC app again using the setup tool from our website here
  • Reconnect the Rift/Link cable and re-test the headset

Please let us know if this is unable to resolve the issue and we'll be happy to dig into it deeper with you!

You're seeing these issues trying to connect via Air Link, but are you seeing the same when using the Link cable? Issues persist with both Air Link and Link cable configurations.

Are these the original installations of these games, or is this all a brand new upgrade, PC included? Original/fresh installations on a fresh installation of Oculus app on a new computer build that had no association to Oculus/Meta prior to the Quest 3.

Are you seeing any issues with any newer PCVR games under Air Link? I tested a few other titles tonight between Steam Link and Air Link. Out of Ammo, Blade & Sorcery, and Google Earth VR are some Steam titles I tested. It seemingly is only this handful of games (others tried were Dragon Front, Altspace VR, & Echo VR (free version). all apparently had shut down but loaded from Oculus library without issue).

With the installation being fresh, I did not see it necessary to strip and reinstall it, especially with these games having issues. Robo Recall is the only one of the three that launches before crashing randomly around 1 minute after opening whereas the other two try to load and immediately crash. Still the same error code of 0xc0000005.

Hi @PattyIce87! Thank you for your swift response, and answering our additional questions. We know it's no fun to not be able to use our devices to their full capacity so we would love to help getting this issue resolved for you. Luckily, we do have a couple of troubleshooting steps we can try. With that being said, can you please try these troubleshooting steps if you haven't already?

  • Update your graphics card drivers to the latest version.
  • Run Windows Update to ensure that your system is up to date.
  • Disable any antivirus or firewall software temporarily and try launching the game again.
  • Try running the game as an administrator.

We've seen these steps help people out in the past with the same issue you're having. We're hoping that they will do the same for you.

However, if you're still having trouble after trying those steps, please don't hesitate to reach back out and let us know. We'll also be here if you have any other questions or concerns. Have a legendary rest of your day!

Thank you PattyIce87 for you research and for posting a fix. You saved me on this one! I encountered this problem after purchasing a new pc and was starting to think I had a hardware problem with my new computer. I read forum post after forum post and studied log files and every lead turned out to be a dead end. I don't know how you found this fix but I really appreciate your work.

You can add Obduction and Heart of the Emberstone to the list of un-patched games.
