Oculus software detecting usb 3.0 as usb 2.0

IceCreeper909

The title should be self-explanatory; My oculus software is detecting my USB 3.0 cable(the Anker one that was recommended before the official link cable) and USB 3.0 port as USB 2.0. I've gone and tried to update my drivers, including uninstall/reinstall, to no avail. Any suggestions for a fix? For reference, both my Quest and PC are running the latest versions, and my PC is link compatible.

Hmm ok, on USB device tree viewer can you see the usb(S) symbol, if so then USB3 is detected and might be turned off in your Bios

Reboot &&
Go into your BIOS and look for setting callled XHCI or XHCI Hand off, if it set to disabled or auto, it needs to be set to enabled.
reboot.
hopefully that should sort it.

Bringing this back to life because I'm having the exact same issue, enablinng XHCI Hand Off didn't fix it.

Where should I go? I have an MSI B250M Gaming Pro MOBO, and those drivers don't fix anything for me

I have a Link cable and the port I was using started detecting at USB2, only for the quest. I switched to another port (next to it on same controller) and it connects again on USB3. Never got to a root cause yet since switching to other port on same USB controller resolved the problem.

Cable speed at USB2 peaks around 360 MB/s where when on USB 3 I get 2.4 GB/s on the USB connection test in the oculus software.  Laptop users may not have as ready a means to switch ports.  The port it originally worked with USB 3 on, has a USB SSD that connects as USB3 without a problem.  Weird issue to pop up.

Oculus staff have already stated on this forum that the Oculus software does NOT detect the port as USB 2 or USB 3. Oculus (so they say) only reports what Windows says the port is.

Apparently, on my PC, Windows changes it's mind on a daily basis about whether or not I have USB3 or USB2. I've been running my CV1 on the same hardware, in the same USB 3 ports, since July 2017. I've never unplugged it, swapped ports changed any hardware, reinstalled either Oculus software or Windows. It always used to show as USB 3, now it doesn't.

Maybe Oculus are right. Maybe Microsoft engineers are not capable of detecting USB ports correctly. I'll say this though, since 1990 I've had less problems with hardware and DOS/Windows than I've had with Rift.

If leading edge software teams can't detect a port that is required for their hardware to run, and rely on a third party to do it for them, then something needs to change.

Unfortunately only have the one USB C port on my mobo 😞

Yeah it really seems like a random issue that Oculus doesn't have an answer for so they blame Microsoft

Look under hardware IDs in the device properties and find the correct drivers by searching the vendor ID and the HWID. Lots of these issues sound like driver problems.

While I agree that it seems to be some weird driver issue, updating the drivers does not fix it

Hi guys, just looked at this issue, from what I can see the system tells the device what type of connection it gets. Using an app called USB Tree Viewer I was able to start the app in administrative mode, find the host controller the Oculus device was on unplug the Oculus device and restart the host controller. Once I had restarted the controller I then plugged the Oculus device back in to see that the device was on a USB 3 port ( ss - super speed ) and then restarted the Oculus software and then my Oculus software could tell it was using a ss port and worked properly again. I know it's not a fix as such but, more of a workaround. Try the method and see what results you get. If you want the USB Tree Viewer, google it as I can't post url's yet or email me if you get stuck I don't mind helping anyone out where I can. deathssaviour@googlemail.com.

Cheers
Jon
