Only games crash on Quest 3

I've have my Meta Quest 3 for less then a week, I've bought 3 games so far. Beat Saber, Blade and Sorcery: Nomad, and Dungeons of Eternity. No matter which one I select to play, after about 5 to 10 minutes(even less for Dungeons of Eternity) of actually playing, the device hard crashes, and automatically resets back to the home screen. I've un-installed and reinstalled the games, I've tried the "hard boot" with the power button and volume down button, I've even factory reset the device, nothing has helped. There are no updates available for anything, and It's only games that keep crashing. I can use non game apps perfectly fine, like the store or browser. I'm just trying to figure out if I need to use my warranty within the first week already. I've been looking forward to a VR set for a while now, and this is ruining the experience for me.

Hey there, @Bron_Sana

We can absolutely see how a crashing display could affect how you can enjoy your new headset, and we absolutely don't want this to be your entrance into the VR world. With this in mind, we wanted to pop to help! To begin with, please clarify the following information:

  • Is your headset fully charged?
  • How long are you able to play on your headset before it crashes?
  • Is your Meta Quest mobile app and headset fully up to date with the latest software version?

-The issue happens whether the headset is fully charged or almost dead. I've seen the battery at 100% when I put the headset on, and at the speed at which the battery discharges, it is usually around 90% after I check any notifications in VR and finally boot a game. Very seldomly it will let me play a game for around 20 minutes before it will crash, and the battery is around 60% afterwards. I normally just make repeated attempts to play any game for longer than 5 minutes until the battery indicator gets orange and it throws a warning to charge the headset.

-As for how long it usually takes before crashing in a game when it does let me play for more than 5 minutes, I can get up to 20 minutes on Dungeons of Eternity or Blade and Sorcery: Nomad before either of them crash, and Beat Saber might give me around 45 minutes if I'm lucky. But once it crashes for the first time after turning the headset on, it loads the game, then once I'm at the point of getting into a combat or heavy action experience, which these games all have a decent amount of action going on fairly soon after starting to play, it will crash. Main menus in the game are fine.

-As I stated in my first post, there are no updates available. That was the first thing I looked for was to see if I needed any updates.

Hello @Bron_Sana !

We understand that you have already tried some of the troubleshooting steps. We suggest you to try the following steps in order:

  • If you have restarted your headset and if any changes caused this to start, undo these changes (Refresh Rate, Hand Tracking, Experimental Settings)
  • Log out and back into the phone app
  • Uninstall that application, restart the headset, and reinstall the application.
  • Hard Reboot the headset
  •  Factory Reset - What this will do is reset the device to a "like-new" state, wiping all information and data off the device. Some of this data can be restored by enabling Cloud Backups beforehand; however, keep in mind that while Cloud Backup is available to all Meta Quest developers, it is up to developers to decide whether to enable this feature for their app and what data is backed up. You can find which installed apps have Cloud Backups enabled on the Cloud Backups page of your Meta account profile. Once you have set up Cloud Backups, ensure your device is fully charged, then proceed with the steps to complete the factory reset. If you still encounter issues charging after following these steps, please reach back out to us.  We will be happy to help further.

Even though you asked me to repeat what I have already done, I figured what the heck, why not.

I logged out of the mobile Meta App, and un-installed it.

I triple checked for updates before turning off my headset, then proceeded to the boot menu and selected the factory reset.

I reinstalled the mobile Meta App and logged back in

I turned on the headset and went through the setup process.

I do not use any of the experimental features, so none are selected.

I turned off the headset and then hard booted it.

Installed the three games from my previous posts then shut the headset off to do another hard boot.

After the second hard boot, I fired up a game.

I think I was able to play for about 30 minutes before it crashed...again. I was getting excited cause I had gotten farther playing the game this time around and was hopeful that it wouldn't crash this time.

Super disappointing.

I even went so far as to make sure there was plenty of room for me to move around in and as much light as I could get in the room, just in case if somehow losing track of the controllers could be an issue.

I'm honestly thinking there is a hardware issue like a craphics card going bad at this point, because I don't know how else to make sure the software is as clean and fresh as can be for it to operate without crashing.

Hello,

I bought the Quest 3 for my granddaughter and it’s very frustrating that many games so far will download ok, but when the game starts it goes to a gray screen with dots and does nothing else. We have to turn off the quest 3 device and restart, but the game never loads. There have only been a small handful of games that work. I can’t believe $500 for a device then games that are expensive that don’t work. Very frustrating.

Hi there @Samtanyagabby, welcome to the Meta Family.

We want to get you back into the Metaverse as soon as possible. Would you mind sending us a private message so we can look into this further for you? To do so, please go to our profile or click here.

We look forward to hearing from you soon!
