PTC v63 Scoped Storage Update

Expert Protege

I know this will be a controversial topic, but there has been a enormous modding scene on Quest 1, 2 and 3 with people installing Nexus/Other mods into their games without needing a phone or computer.  And the introduction of Scoped Storage in V51 slowed modding for a month with the blocking on /Android/data, but a work around was eventually found with Scoped Storage that allowed access to all the juicy game/files/Mods folders.  But the V63 update has stealth updated Scoped Storage without notice and imposed additional restrictions that are more strict then Android 13.  This update will stop the average of 20k users a day from installing mods on a device they own without needing a computer or phone.

Just to state, if I point Scoped Storage to /Android/data, in the past, it would allow the user to grant access to the folder.  But after V63 it and all children are blocked due to privacy concerns.

Now still, a user can plug into their computer and access the the /Android/data content, which kind of makes locking it up from itself a weird flex of requiring a PC to mod their games.

Hey everyone! My apologies on the late reply; I've been communicating with the team about this every week and I've now got something worth sharing. Here is what the team has provided me:

We have received feedback regarding the recent adjustments to folder access and modifications (mods) on Quest. While the issue has been addressed by requiring user permissions for some specific actions (i.e. giving developers the option to allow access to scoped storage for their apps), we understand that this may have presented challenges for some of our customers. We want to assure you that we are dedicated to delivering a stable and secure platform for all.
In an effort to maintain the functionality and security of our devices we need to adhere to the specific guidelines Android sets for its operating system. When Android issues updates from time to time, the new guidelines and restrictions can impact our users' current experiences.

Thank you for your understanding and patience. We value your input and will continue to work towards providing the best possible experience for all of our customers.

After the recent updates, I noticed Android data and obb folders are no longer accessible when using third party file managers or when trying to mod a game. I am not certain but I believe this has changed when updating to PTC v63. This is on Meta Quest 3. I have never noticed this issue until now.

I actually need help with this desperately

This definitely seems to be a new issue with v63

hey i heard that you guys are getting rid of scoped storage, I have had a blast moding. just plaza don't get rid of it.

So recently scoped storage was locked by the v63 update. Thing is games that have multiple mods installed become unable to be played because of the mods not being able to load. Im hoping this is a bug

I really really hope they find a way past it, I'm really upset that I can't mod my games rn

How to get mods now😐😐😐

meta is actively supressing modders severely limiting modding freedoms for people who legally purchased their games. theyve taken steps to prevent managment of scoped files (such are used for modding) and with their shoddy game catalouge they wont even allow people to mod their own game. so unless you own a pc you cannot access what you need to Mod.

If this doesnt change soon, i suggest modders take their device into their own control if you know what i mean. im going to stop purchasing things from Meta and related companies until they change this, I suggest others to follow suit.

Hey everyone! I've seen quite a few of y'all reaching out here and in the PTC v63 Release Thread about this issue and wanted to get some more information for everyone. I reached out to our internal team to see if we have any news on this, and it appears our team is aware of this and is currently looking into what can be done. From what I understand, prohibiting access to the scoped storage within your headset wasn't a feature that Meta intentionally added, but instead was a part of a new update to Android that implemented some security features, which has locked access to files. I will continue to look into this and provide any updates I receive along the way! Thank you all for your patience during this time. I look forward to working with everyone on this!
