PTC v63 Scoped Storage Update

SlashAndBurn
Expert Protege

I know this will be a controversial topic, but there has been a enormous modding scene on Quest 1, 2 and 3 with people installing Nexus/Other mods into their games without needing a phone or computer.  And the introduction of Scoped Storage in V51 slowed modding for a month with the blocking on /Android/data, but a work around was eventually found with Scoped Storage that allowed access to all the juicy game/files/Mods folders.  But the V63 update has stealth updated Scoped Storage without notice and imposed additional restrictions that are more strict then Android 13.  This update will stop the average of 20k users a day from installing mods on a device they own without needing a computer or phone.

Just to state, if I point Scoped Storage to /Android/data, in the past, it would allow the user to grant access to the folder.  But after V63 it and all children are blocked due to privacy concerns.

Now still, a user can plug into their computer and access the the /Android/data content, which kind of makes locking it up from itself a weird flex of requiring a PC to mod their games.

There is regrettably no way to say this without sounding rude however i request you simply just fix scoped storage and refrain from making pitiful excuses to say “I don’t want to fix mods” please just do it

It doesn't break modding, there are other ways to mod.

And it makes sense that It behaves this way because that's how Android behaves.  There's nothing to fix because it's not broken.  And if they're trying to get the Google store like they've been saying they're trying to do, they have to stay as close to Android as possible, And that includes scoped storage

First of all: that's not entirely true, this is recommended by Google but Meta can do whatever they want

Secondly : if it was actually about following Google recommendation they should have done it much sooner. It's weird coincidence that they made this change about week or two after Fallout 3 was launched on Quest 3 thru Winlator

Thirdly: I don't know how much news do you digest but they say that this is Meta OS and it's their own operating system. So communiting to the world that on one hand you have YOUR OWN operating system and on the other hand you have no control over it and you have to do what Google tells you... Well that's quite laughable

Whatever the reason, it's done and is not likely to change. Other methods are going to have to be used to mod games. Particularly over ADB through another device, This is how we now handle beat saber modding, and it's just going to have to be how it's done.

That's a pity, I bought quest 3 as a replacement for the HP G2, since wmr is being discontinued.

I was thinking about giving meta catalog a chance, after learning of the modding scene.
I suppose I will stick with PCVR.

if thats true how come they lied to us saying v63 would fix it AND IT STILL AINT FIXED

This update is the worst, i got a quest 2 because i dont have a pc and dont have a spare thousand or more to buy one, a couple months after i got it, no mods unless mod.io is built into the game but even then mod.io is limited, no work around rn works for me, and i doubt android gives a single shiz about fixing it, personally i think modding is ruined for good unless you have a pc, sucks major a hole
