PTC v76 - Quest 3 still not fully charging, continued from v74

Issue persists on PTC v76, attempted all suggested fixes to no avail, headset will not reliably charge past 75%, and the following does NOT RESOLVE IT:

  • Factory reset
  • Reboot from OS
  • Reboot from recovery menu
  • Full power off / power on
  • Using any combination of official charging accessories (included adapter / cable, official dock / battery strap)
  • Draining battery fully and attempting full recharge
  • Attempting to charge from any menu in any part of the OS, pre or post boot
  • Waiting any amount of time once the battery no longer accepts charge

Any response suggesting any of the above will be assumed to be a bot and will be ignored.

This issue is VERY DANGEROUS TO USERS, as lithium batteries not being charged properly can and often do fail explosively, potentially resulting in damage to property or life-altering injury. This should be addressed immediately before users are hurt.

Meta is broken and I'm worried that they really screwed their stuff up this time. I've watched my battery only charge to 78, then 76, then 74 then 69%. It is now charging to only 71%. Looking at other alternatives to headsets as Horizon Worlds is also a mess and not really something that I would mess.

Putting my findings here also from the other thread :

Headset accepts power inversely proportionnal to how much the battery is currently charged.

This means that fully powered off and left alone for long enough, you can still manage to charge to 100% (don't know exactly how long, just left it charging overnight).

If the headset is running and plugged in, even if fully charged, it will not request enough power to "run itself" (at 99% mine consumed about 5W from the wall) leading to the battery slowly discharging.

It eventually reaches an equilibrium around 70 to 80% where my headset finally pulled around 12-16W from the adapter which meant it wouldn't discharge any further (at least mine does now).

That is NOT how this is supposed to work. While running, the headset should pull whatever power it needs to run + however many watts required to recharge the battery (capped by the max wattage of the device/cable/energy source) and should NOT involve the battery at all when fully charged.

(Also quick note, although I didn't check wattage draw then, before doing a full power off from the recovery screen after the update to v74, my headset would go as low as 7% battery while plugged in and in use)

EDIT :

Something I forgot, but the headset does behave as expected when in the "powered off state". A short press on the power button turns the screen on to display battery status, and instantly requests more power to run the screen, and falls back down as soon as the screen turns off.

After contacting support I've been told it will be fixed in no time however they could not give me an ETA, I was advised I could use the headset safely as long as I did not try to forcefully charge it to 100% and that the engineers are actively investigating the issue, there was no mention of replacement or repair of my headset so guess all we can do is wait. Really frustrating.

In my case, even fully shutting the device off as described still does not allow it to charge to 100% using the charging dock. Worse, it actually doesn't pass anything through to the Elite Battery Strap when on or off while charging on the dock, so while in use it will allow that to drain entirely, but never charge it back up once docked (since it waits for the headset itself to reach 85% before starting to). I have to dock the headset while also plugging in the Elite Battery to bypass this, it's infuriating to deal with this when I use 100% official items.

I know that the elite strap behaves a bit funky. It wouldn't charge to 100% if it wasn't connected to the headset for me, so I'm guessing there's also a bug there where it's possibly interfering when the headset is on the dock with the battery plugged into the headset. I don't own the dock, but both plugging just the headset overnight, or elite strap into headset, and elite strap to the wall allowed me to charge everything to 100%.

We’ve all done that and support was USELESS.

they won’t escalate the ticket, they won’t pass any info on to the firmware/engineering team.

the only thing support wants to do is

1) reset the units and then

2) see if we can replace it for a used item.

neither option is the answer and their actions are useless.

To answer the question, Yes I still need support just like the numerous other people in this thread. SMH

I’ve been through this twice before.

1) quest 2 v53 broke charging the same way. Back then you could hit 100% by charging at the boot loader menu.

2) quest 3 early firmware broke WiFi making PcVr unstable.

Neither of those issues had a real fix that completely solved the problem.

what’s worse is Meta will mark the forum thread as “resolved” and then an admin will add a comment that “we marked it resolved but we know it’s still awaiting a fix.” As if their SLA is at risk leaving it open making it look bad.

it is bad!
