Quest 1 apps do not update, cloud backup not working

As per subject. I can see in my meta horizons mobile app that I have multiple apps that need updating but they will not update in my Quest 1. The apps do not show as needing updates at all.

I checked my cloud backup date and the last good backup was December 2023. All my apps are backed up to that date and after that they all stop working.

My software version is 0.50.

I have 8gb free space on the device.

Please relay the following to whoever is in charge of user sentiment and PR:

My quest is in very good condition due to my being extremely careful with it and taking care of it. It runs like it was just out of the factory with zero issues and no problems.

To discontinue a perfectly fine, usable product after less than 4 years of support is wasteful, ridiculous, and anti-consumer. What am I supposed to do with this device? E-waste? Junk it? Just buy a new one and waste all the energy, rare metals, and money? This headset could easily run for another 4 years. There is no reason to release 6 headsets in the last 5 years if users cannot use them. I have a laptop from 2015 I still use. My PC motherboard and CPU is from 2016. My phone is older than this headset. Meta's decisionmaking is shortsighted, customer unfriendly, and frankly given the state of the environment and the planet, deeply reckless.

I did the research on, and purchased, and was happy with, an Oculus product. I have never had a single good experience with any Meta product, or even Facebook product, none of your company's apps or websites have ever added anything positive to my life. My friends are constantly complaining about the quality of Instagram,  no one I know is on Threads, your company burned billions of dollars trying to make your dead-on-arrival Metaverse, and you throw away perfectly good headsets less than 4 years old for no good reason.

I am aware no one reading this is in charge of any of the decisions that I highlighted above. But you have lost me as a customer permanently and I will do everything in my power to make sure that everyone I can influence will never be a customer of your products ever again.

I hope that when you receive orders to announce the discontinuing of the quest 2 at the end of this year (or earlier? who knows) that you let the decision maker know that whatever savings the company makes by shifting the team onto something else, the company then loses far more in customer sentiment, loyalty, and trust.

Short sighted decisions to short sighted ends.

With every ounce of sincerety I have,

A lost customer.

We understand your frustration, especially since you've taken such good care of your Meta Quest 1, and it can be disappointing when a product that still works physically begins to face software limitations. The comparison with your PC is valid, but the challenge with VR technology is that it evolves much more rapidly than traditional computing devices. Over the past few years, advancements in VR have been significant, particularly in terms of software demands and hardware capabilities.

While your Meta Quest 1 was groundbreaking at launch, newer VR apps and features are designed with more powerful hardware in mind to deliver smoother, more immersive experiences. As a result, older headsets may struggle to support these updates. It's not about the device being in pristine condition physically, but rather the pace of innovation in this space.

That said, we do want to assure you that your Quest 1 isn't becoming completely obsolete, as it can still run the apps and games you've enjoyed up to this point, and it should continue to offer the experiences it was designed for. However, as newer apps and features become available, they often require more advanced processing power that the Quest 1 can't fully support.

Again, we wanted to mention that upgrading to something like the Quest 3 or 3S would ensure you can enjoy the latest apps and features, while also extending the life of your VR experience for years to come. Of course, the decision to upgrade is entirely up to you, and we're here to support you no matter what path you choose.

I understand that you're just doing your job. Please relay the above post to the relevant teams. I will not be purchasing any meta products for the rest of my life and am in the process of ensuring no one I know does either.

Why would I upgrade to the 3 or 3s just for you to discontinue it in 3 years time? Fool me once.

I completely understand where you are coming as consumers we all want our devices to be able to last many years of enjoyment. VR is such a rapidly evolving industry which is certainly exciting however it can lead to older hardware being left behind a bit in the chase of innovation.

This does not make older hardware completely obsolete as you can still continue to enjoy the device as you have done in the past it just means active development has left it behind.

In terms of the Quest 3 and 3S I will leave links to the information pages below for you to check out their capabilities yourself and decide if they would be of any interest to you:

Meta Quest 3.

Meta Quest 3S.

Thank you for your contribution! I hope you will continue to enjoy Meta products either by continuing to boot up your Quest 1 or by checking out any of the newer products available.

I know you're probably mandated to link to new products but you realize you're making me angrier instead of actually helping right

If you want me to continue to enjoy Meta products give me store credit or a partial refund. Otherwise forget it.
