So, I have recently discovered a huge potential problem. I started to notice that my Quest 2 won't charge - even though it would show that it's charging both by LED and the battery icon.
After using the Link, I always sit the Quest 2 down and power it off (holding the PWR button), still attached to my PC. The LED showed orange all the time, so I didn't look into it and thought that all is well. Then, I started to notice that my Quest 2 is not at 100% after picking it up to play the next day. Moreover, it appeared stuck on the same percentage that it was the day before.
So I started to dig into this:
1. Official Link cable + laptop = not charging (orange LED, stuck at the same %)
2. Official Link cable + Quest 2 charger = not charging (orange LED, stuck at the same %)
3. Asus USB-C laptop charger = not charging (orange LED, stuck at the same %)
After some Googling, I have tried to charge the Quest 2 in the DFU mode (PWR + volume down). I enabled it and sit the Quest 2 down. 'Lo and behold...it started charging. But only in DFU. The charge stopped after I turned the headset on or off.
I've downloaded USBDeview - this program lets you see all USB devices connected, USB protocols and speeds they're running at - and most importantly, the amperage going to the devices.
When the headset is off - it took 0 mA. Sitting at 53%.
When the headset is in DFU - it took 128 mA. Not much, but we take those - and it's enough to charge it very slowly.
After some cross-referencing, I nailed it down to the 39.0 update. Something is majorly screwed.
Some other interesting findings:
1. Sometimes, Quest 2 is actually charging. But never to 100%. I've noticed that it sometimes jumps from 53% that I left it at to 72% and is stuck there
2. The percentage sometimes would show 100% when powered off after being connected to the charging cable - but the battery icon would show the correct 2/4 bars - because in reality when powered on, the Quest 2 would show me something like 56-57% battery
3. The only way to charge to 100% is the DFU mode.
I cannot stress this enough, the headset is NOT physically faulty. It used to charge just fine before the 39.0 update.
And it still does so. But only in the DFU mode.
That points me towards a software issue.

Same issue! For 1 and a half years no problem whatsoever until yesterday it was all fine. Today morning despite being plugged in to my 24/7 running PC over night, it was on 85% when I put it on. Tried 10 different combination of chargers and cables oem and 3rd party, nothing worked and the battery went further down to 77%. I got the solid orange light but my USB power meter showed 0A current and nothing got warmed up at all. Now in DFU mode it pulls 1.38A and I can feel a slight warmth of the battery in the headset. It's a bit annoying not being able to see the progress only when the current finally starts dropping on the meter...
This is 100% software bug, So far it only happened to the 256Gb headset running v42, the 64Gb seems to be ok, but I didn't check what version is that on. Will check later on.
35 mins later the current is indeed dropping, at the moment it's fluctuating between 0.7-0.8A
After an hour it was still charging with 0.4-0.5A and the LED was solid orange but I wanted to play so I unplugged restarted and surprisingly it showed 100% charge. After playing a little while it dropped to 65%.... now I'm going to charge it until it stops pulling any current.
Other interesting thing is as long as the screen is on it's pulling some current between 0.4-0.8A but as headset goes to sleep current drops to 0A
There is something very very wrong with the software!

Not sure if I'm having the exact same issue as you all, but I just bought a 128G Quest 2 (my second) and literally just on updating, my battery was draining from 100% down in single percents per minute and then dropping larger percents (upwards of 20% instantly) and going into a shutdown loop. I did a factory reset as the red light was on and charged it. Weirdly, the charge light turned green in like 10 minutes and it was at 100% again but obviously still not charged as the same thing continued to happen.
Maybe the same battery bug on a new headset?
I haven't updated my older 128G so I'm not sure if it will happen to it.
This really sucks because I bought one for my daughter to play Walkabout with and I spent all evening troubleshooting until I found this thread.

Just tested my headset above and it was fully charged after an overnight charge with the adapter it came with and it rapidly depleted in about 10min of playing Walkabout. I actually saw the indicator jump from 14 to 8% just after I got the low power warning as well.

Now some new issues started after v42 update, the headset battery only lasts about 30 - 45 minutes even when it says 100% so maybe not really fully charging and when using Airlink and one of my controllers battery level gets to 20% I get a popup that says something about Dash Fatal Warning and to push any button to restart dash my pc has a window that says "Request Failed Minified Exception Occurred" changing the low controller battery seems to work but I used to be able to go down to almost 0% with no problems, And so far no info on a fix.

All right, so I've discovered some interesting details since Sunday.
It does charge to 100% in DFU mode, only it's not very fast... LED never turns green even though battery is 100% charged. It never stops pulling around 0.3A-0.4A, I assume that's on the screen backlight's account. Turning it on or starting it up from DFU mode cuts off battery charging instantly but interestingly when the proximity sensor is activated (covered or headset is on the head) it is pulling exactly as much current as the headset uses to run. It doesn't charge the battery at all, but as long as my powerbank is feeding while I'm playing, the battery percentage doesn't drop even a bit. When I take it off my head it immediately stops pulling any current even if the screen is still on so that's when the battery depletes. Also depleting when it's connected to the computer via USB for moving files or whatever. Obviously any time I cover up the proximity sensor it starts using the powerbank again, but it doesn't charge the battery at all.
Very very strange issue, definitely software related, no question.
I really hope it will be patched faster then a blink of an eye, I feel like yesterday was already
a bit late!
Oh, and I've checked my wife's 64Gb Q2, it's also running software v42 but thankfully it doesn't have any issues so far. She would be pretty pissed off having to eff around with DFU mode just to charge the headset, more like she wouldn't even use it until it's fixed.
Oculus people, I think you have plenty enough details to know where to start looking for the bug.

Good analysis, biowiet.
>> It does charge to 100% in DFU mode, only it's not very fast... LED never turns green even though battery is 100% charged.<< Same is happening with my set.
A good question is why your wife's set does not have this issue since the firmware is the same on you both sets.

I also have the exact same issue as everyone else with the issue. Charging in DFU mode works but that's it. At first thought it was just me not plugging it in correctly, but after doing my research found that this is a widespread issue. Hoping they can do something to fix it as most people have mentioned, definitely appears to be some sort of software issue. Also have the issue where if you power it off, as soon as you plug it in to charge, the headset powers on. I'm pretty sure it didn't do that before, and I've had it since the thing first came out.

Btw i've been trying to get my Quest 2 to fully charge in DFU mode but it takes forever. How long typically do you leave your Quest 2 charged to get to 100% from say 0%, 25% or 50%? Also, I'm using a USB 3 cable from my PC to charge.

It takes nearly an entire day for me to get up to 100% from ~20% seems to charge slow in DFU mode or the screen staying on drains more than I would expect
08-16-2022 07:13 PM
yeah okay. way i see it, DFU mode keeps the screen on, so that in itself drains the battery as it charges, which to me, is uh, counter-intuitive for charging purposes in the long run. lol.
