Quest 2 not fully charging since 39.0 firmware update

So, I have recently discovered a huge potential problem. I started to notice that my Quest 2 won't charge - even though it would show that it's charging both by LED and the battery icon.

After using the Link, I always sit the Quest 2 down and power it off (holding the PWR button), still attached to my PC. The LED showed orange all the time, so I didn't look into it and thought that all is well. Then, I started to notice that my Quest 2 is not at 100% after picking it up to play the next day. Moreover, it appeared stuck on the same percentage that it was the day before.

So I started to dig into this:

1. Official Link cable + laptop = not charging (orange LED, stuck at the same %)

2. Official Link cable + Quest 2 charger = not charging (orange LED, stuck at the same %)

3. Asus USB-C laptop charger = not charging (orange LED, stuck at the same %)

After some Googling, I have tried to charge the Quest 2 in the DFU mode (PWR + volume down). I enabled it and sit the Quest 2 down. 'Lo and behold...it started charging. But only in DFU. The charge stopped after I turned the headset on or off.

I've downloaded USBDeview - this program lets you see all USB devices connected, USB protocols and speeds they're running at - and most importantly, the amperage going to the devices.

When the headset is off - it took 0 mA. Sitting at 53%.

When the headset is in DFU - it took 128 mA. Not much, but we take those - and it's enough to charge it very slowly.

After some cross-referencing, I nailed it down to the 39.0 update. Something is majorly screwed.

Some other interesting findings:

1. Sometimes, Quest 2 is actually charging. But never to 100%. I've noticed that it sometimes jumps from 53% that I left it at to 72% and is stuck there

2. The percentage sometimes would show 100% when powered off after being connected to the charging cable - but the battery icon would show the correct 2/4 bars  - because in reality when powered on, the Quest 2 would show me something like 56-57% battery

3. The only way to charge to 100% is the DFU mode.

I cannot stress this enough, the headset is NOT physically faulty. It used to charge just fine before the 39.0 update.

And it still does so. But only in the DFU mode.

That points me towards a software issue.

Long term I'm worried about the extra backlight hours so I haven't been using my quest as much, also not sure if it sitting on the same image for an entire day will cause any burn in on this type of display.

yep agreed. thanks for sharing the experience.

Been on with Support for over 2 weeks with no solution except to reset to factory, then they said the problem is being fixed and v43 will fix the charging issue, Well After v43 Update I still have the battery not fully charging issue only charges to 53% and in DFU Mode it will charge to 100%, 0 Amps with headset off and 1.5 Amps with headset in DFU Mode, META broke it and can't fix it LOL!!! Maybe META needs to get back the Oculus Team.

I also still have this problem after the v43 update. My headset Model Revision is "Hollywood (DVT)" if that helps.

I haven't used my quest 2 in a while, just recently noticed that the headset led was always orange while plugged in. I turned the headset on and noticed that it was at 53%. Long story short I looked the issue up and stumbled upon this thread. ALL symptoms match the topic. I can't believe this is still not fixed. Now that I started playing it again, it's very annoying to have to deal with this issue, I hope this bring attention to it and it gets fixed with an update. I'm abroad and I can't return the unit for replacement even if they accept it.

I also noticed that sometimes the headset set shows 100% while OFF and plugged in, but the first green dot is solid and the 2nd is blinking, as soon as I unplug it, the number will instantly drop to 53%

Hello @nourgle! We're not happy you're going through this experience. We'd love to help guide you through this today.

Have you updated your headset to version 43.0? Here's an app to help.

As I previously posted, I have the exact same issue as nourgle and updating to version 43 didn't fix it for me. Nothing can get it to charge past 53% but since I mostly use it through quest link on my PC for sim racing it isn't normally an issue, it just stays at 53%. But if I ever did want to use it as just a normal quest 2 that battery life is going to be very annoying.

Though I haven't factory reset since updating to version 43. I did try that before that version though. Could that be a possible fix?

Thanks for your response. It most definitely can be a fix!

Enable Cloud Backup and then perform a factory reset.

Fingers crossed that it works!

Alright I'll give that a shot today and post back my results. Thanks
