Quest 2 not fully charging since 39.0 firmware update

Fatalution

So, I have recently discovered a huge potential problem. I started to notice that my Quest 2 won't charge - even though it would show that it's charging both by LED and the battery icon.

After using the Link, I always sit the Quest 2 down and power it off (holding the PWR button), still attached to my PC. The LED showed orange all the time, so I didn't look into it and thought that all is well. Then, I started to notice that my Quest 2 is not at 100% after picking it up to play the next day. Moreover, it appeared stuck on the same percentage that it was the day before.

So I started to dig into this:

1. Official Link cable + laptop = not charging (orange LED, stuck at the same %)

2. Official Link cable + Quest 2 charger = not charging (orange LED, stuck at the same %)

3. Asus USB-C laptop charger = not charging (orange LED, stuck at the same %)

After some Googling, I have tried to charge the Quest 2 in the DFU mode (PWR + volume down). I enabled it and sit the Quest 2 down. 'Lo and behold...it started charging. But only in DFU. The charge stopped after I turned the headset on or off.

I've downloaded USBDeview - this program lets you see all USB devices connected, USB protocols and speeds they're running at - and most importantly, the amperage going to the devices.

When the headset is off - it took 0 mA. Sitting at 53%.

When the headset is in DFU - it took 128 mA. Not much, but we take those - and it's enough to charge it very slowly.

After some cross-referencing, I nailed it down to the 39.0 update. Something is majorly screwed.

Some other interesting findings:

1. Sometimes, Quest 2 is actually charging. But never to 100%. I've noticed that it sometimes jumps from 53% that I left it at to 72% and is stuck there

2. The percentage sometimes would show 100% when powered off after being connected to the charging cable - but the battery icon would show the correct 2/4 bars  - because in reality when powered on, the Quest 2 would show me something like 56-57% battery

3. The only way to charge to 100% is the DFU mode.

I cannot stress this enough, the headset is NOT physically faulty. It used to charge just fine before the 39.0 update.

And it still does so. But only in the DFU mode.

That points me towards a software issue.

Temp Solution:

- Shut down the device

- Start by holding Volume (-) button and pressing power button

- Connect to power supply via a USB cable

- After ~2 hours it will be charged to 100%.

Same issue as well.
Meta/Oculus has really dropped the ball on this.  So many problems.

  1. The issue with them not having any controllers/parts on the store for months.
  2. The bug that causes Oculus Dashboard to crash every time your controller is low on battery. (which STILL isn't fixed, by the way)
  3.  And now, it won't charge unless in USB/Debug mode.  It will actually LOSE power while powered down and still on the charger, while powered down.

I REALLY don't like the idea of having it eventually burn the Debug menu into the lens, like you see in old arcade games or some monitors, when stuck on the same image for a long time, repeatedly.

Try charging with power off for 10 minutes and see if battery power increases. If not, put in standby mode, charge a bit, and see if battery  power increases. I charge in power off mode for an hour..it stops at 48%. Then I switch to standby mode , and it usyally gets to 100%, sometimes it gets stuck at 82% so I put in shutdown mode to finish. Keep rotating modes if it gets stuck. I prefer not to charge in USB Debug mode.

Nope. Power still goes down.  Dropped from 85% to 53%, despite being turned off and using the default charger.
I shouldn't have to be "cycling between modes" to charge a $400+ piece of equipment.

Oculus screwed up with these last few updates.  If they think denying correlation will save them for the next release, they are sorely mistaken.  No one wants to buy a VR set that becomes broken 2-3 months after they buy it.   VR is hard to sell, as is already. They aren't making it any easier.

Thanks for your testing, I'm also seeing this.

My going theory is that the battery management system lost track of where the battery is. It doesn't know the state of charge and because of this, it sometimes shoots up to reporting it's 100% charged when it's not. At that point, it turns on trickle charging which could take days, if charging at all.

Huge screw up and I don't see Meta doing anything about it over the many months this critical issue has been documented. We did get "followers" on the latest firmware update so that makes it so much better /s

Anyone wondering why v44 update doesn’t solve this at all???

Hey there! That's not what we want to hear for our valued customers. We'd love to see what we can do to help you.

Can you please do the steps in this order:

  • Charge the headset for 2 hours. The headset must be left powered off or in a sleep state during this time.
  • Try a different Cable/Charger if possible
  • Are you using a facial interface accessory.? If so, please have them attempt to charge the headset again without the facial interface accessory. Some facial interfaces may block the proximity sensor which can impact the power of the headset.
  • Are you using any third-party accessories? If so, disconnect any third-party accessories and try charging the headset without the accessories.
  • Try charging from a different Source
  • Have liquids spilled on the headset?
  • See if the headset will load the boot screen and then exit out

Hold the power and volume (-) button on the headset down simultaneously until the boot screen loads

                 Exit and reboot the headset

                 Reboot the headset if possible

                 Factory reset

Please let us know if this helps you. We want to get you back to gaming.

    - BEEN DOING THIS SINCE V40. DOESN'T WORK.
  • Try a different Cable/Charger if possible
    - TRIED THREE DIFFERENT CABLES. DOESN'T WORK.
  • Are you using a facial interface accessory.? If so, please have them attempt to charge the headset again without the facial interface accessory. Some facial interfaces may block the proximity sensor which can impact the power of the headset.
    - NO I AM NOT.

    - NO I AM NOT.

    - TRIED DIFFERENT SOURCES. DOESN'T WORK.

    - NEVER.
  • See if the headset will load the boot screen and then exit out

Hold the power and volume (-) button on the headset down simultaneously until the boot screen loads

                 Exit and reboot the headset

                 Reboot the headset if possible
- HAVE TRIED GOING INTO DFU MODE. TRIED CHARGING IN DFU MODE. DOESN'T WORK.

                 Factory reset
- ONLY IF THIS IS 100% CONFIRMED TO WORK. UNTIL THEN, NO.

Did you update to V44? Did it improve anything for you?

Yep. I'm also either seeing 53% and, if it's a lucky day, 83%. I get misreports of 100% as well, but it's usually 53% when I boot it up.
