Quest 2 oculus link screen tearing

My quest 2 has been experiencing screen tearing with most games, the screen tearing starts after sometimes not immediately, usually after a loading screen or after the game lags a bit, after that the screen tearing won't stop whenever I move my head, there's no lag or stuttering. I would need to reconnect my link cable and restart the game, after a while, the screen tearing starts again. Anyone has the same issue? If yes please help 🙂

Hey there! Screen tearing definitely isn't what any of us want to wrestle with. Let's take a closer look and see if we can get to the bottom of this! To get started, we have a few questions for you.

 

  • How long has this been going on?
  • What are the specs of your PC. We're looking for GPU, CPU, RAM, and ensuring you're plugged into a USB 3.0 port.
  • Have you updated your CPU and GPU drivers to their most recent versions?

Hi, first of all thank you very much for your reply,

  • It's been around 6 months since I bought it on Dec 2021, it's playable but not enjoyable
  • I have lenovo legion 5, ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3060 6GB, 16 GB RAM, and connected to USB 3.0 with third party cable
  • I always make sure my windows 11 is updated, same goes to nvidia geforce experience and lenovo vantage software

There is one more issue, sometimes one third of the screen at the bottom would become discolored after playing a while(mostly after loading in game or minor lag), sometimes it's white color sometimes purple, it looks like a filter over the screen. Hope u have a fix for all these issues 🙂 Thanks.

Awesome, great to hear you're up to date with Windows 11 and your GPU drivers. We do want to be up front that Windows 11 support is still in beta, so there could still be some issues. With that being said, let's take a look at some possibilities! 

 

Could you please answer the following:

 

  • Does the same issue happen with Air Link?
  • What have you already attempted? So not to repeat anything.

 

Some other helpful steps are as follows:

 

  • Install the latest Oculus drivers:
    • Close the Oculus app.
    • Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard to open the Run command.
    • Enter C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-drivers.
    • Open oculus-driver.
    • Open the Oculus app and then try to connect your headset again.

 

  • Confirm your performance settings are default:
    • Open the Oculus app on your Computer.
    • Click Devices on the left side of the app.
    • Click Quest and Touch.
    • Click Graphics Preferences.
    • Click Reset to default.
    • Click Save and Restart

I do not think your rig has the specs to run a lot of PCVR, even if it's above the minimum. I'm not certain that any current PC build can claim a 100% stable PCVR experience on the Quest 2. Not even a comparable experience between it and other headsets. Even the Oculus Rift.

The Quest 2 requires more PC resources than, as far as I understand, any other headset on the market. For various technical reasons, that we consumers cannot fully be certain of. 

It's best to look at it as needing something like 50% more than the games listed minium specs.

 

The tearing that you are experiencing is an unpleasant result of low frame rate, at the very root. I believe the actual effect is from a technique Meta tried to make it more bearable. Possibly Asynchronous Spacewarp. Just imagine what many gamers mistakingly call "lag" on regular monitors would appear like in VR. Then that the work on making it more bearable for users, possibly, by not skipping frames. 

 

The second issue is still ongoing. 

Hi there, I think I was able to fix the issue a little bit, I played for one hour yesterday and today, the screen tearing issue only happened once after a lag/stuttering, and I was able to get rid of it by pressing the power button to let it sleep and turn back on again (which I don't know why I never tried before). This is what I did to reduce the screen tearing,

  • Click Remove Device in the Oculus desktop app and reconnect the headset
  • Reset the graphic preferences from 90 Hz to 72 Hz
  • Change the Oculus Debug Tool settings back to default, only Mobile ASW disabled

All these somehow reduce the screen tearing issue for now. Hope it will last 🙂

is the issue with just steamvr games or for both oculus and steam? I was having a similar issue with screen tearing and lag when using link with my quest 2 and realized it was just when i was launching steamvr games. I ended up fixing it by changing the OpenXR Runtime setting from "oculus" to "steamvr" and it fixed my issues. to get to the setting open steamvr settings and turn on "show" advanced settings and go to developer to switch.

So I also am noticing screen tearing while playing Microsoft Flight Simulator  2020.   Here's my PC specs: 

CPU:Intel Corei7 9600K 3.6 GHz
Motherboard: ASRock Z390 Phantom Gaming
RAM: 64GB DDR4 3200
Graphics Card: NVIDIA NMSI RTX 3080 Ti 12 GB
SSD: PNY CS2130 2TB M.2 PCIe NVMe Gen3
Monitor: ASUS 24" 1080P Gaming Monitor G-SYNC

 

I do have the Quest 2 cabled into the headset and into a USB 3.0 port that comes off the motherboard on the back. I was using an HP Rift S and it cabled into the video card via on open  display port on the 3080 Ti. So teh display post has a max bandwidth of 77.4 Gbs while USB c through 3.0 has a maximum speed of 5 Gbs. There was tearing while I was using the HP but it could be solved by turning off the Antialiasing on the headset in the oculus app, and using the key combo ( left Ctrl + num pad 1). 

 

I know the debug tool works to reduce the screen tearing located at "C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-diagnostics" then you select "Toggle console window visibility" from the Service drop down menu. Which makes the oculus app restart. Then the console window has to be the active window.  So you can be playing the game and then if you want to say select a button in the cockpit of a plane you need to alt+tab cycle to MSFS 2020, then alt+tab back to the Oculus console window ( the debug tool).

 

This means you have to push your headset up, fidget with the keyboard etc. every time you want to select say flaps, or landing gear, or your Garmin GPS.  How could we maybe find a way to turn off the Antialiasing  in the Quest 2, so that only the game is using its antialiasing ?
