Quest 2 wont link, stutters if it does connect

I have a Quest 2 headset and use it for both my home computer and with my laptop while I travel.  My laptop specs are: Razer Blade 14" with Ryzen 9 6900HX @3.3ghz, 16gb RAM and a built in Nvidia 3060. This laptop does have onboard graphics as well as the GPU, so there's a little confusion there.

The issue I am having is when I try to connect to my laptop via link cable (USB 3 port) or air link, I get nothing but a black loading screen.  (see below for caveat to that).

These are the troubleshooting steps I have tried so far:

1. after scouring and searching forum's I have gone in and done the safe mode uninstall of the oculus software, then re-installed. Confirmed the laptop and headset are on the same Wi-Fi connection, and that all processes that are un-necessary are closed out.

2. I set the preferred graphics processor for the entire computer to use the GPU vs. the onboard graphics thru the Nvidia control panel.

3. in graphics settings I set the oculus app to use "power saver".  This did work, but the connection stuttered extremely bad.  Thinking that perhaps it was a lack of power issue, I went into the BIOS and set the computers graphics to process through the GPU there as well as Nvidia control panel.  After doing this, I am unable to get anything other than a black screen with loading dots.

I am curious if it is an internet speed issue, as in a hotel they don't have the best internet in the world, and further more the 2 other connections I tried aren't much better than the hotel.  Where I don't understand that being an issue when I am not playing an online game and the data just needs to transfer between the laptop and the headset. Not download and upload data from the interwebs.

To be clear, this is an issue only on my laptop, my home PC works just fine and I have no issues there.

Got back home and connected my laptop here at the house and it worked just fine.  Must be a bandwidth issue because of the three networks I tried the best speeds I could achieve were 5-10Mbps, where my home connection is 1000Mbps.  I suspected firewall issues with the hotel's wifi, so I used my phones "hotspot" capability, as well as a physical hotspot.  Solution appears to be just a faster internet connection.

Hey there, @Kryptkid! Thank you for bringing this to our attention and letting us know the troubleshooting steps you have attempted, as we see that when you try to connect to your laptop via a link cable (USB 3 port) or AirLink, you are greeted with a black loading screen, and it stutters when it does connect. Since you are only experiencing this issue with your laptop and not your desktop, as you mentioned, most likely the laptop is not compatible. Some PCs may have more than one GPU in them. This is particularly common with laptop computers. Quite often, one of these GPUs is not compatible with the Oculus PCVR. Please make sure your laptop is using the dedicated GPU for PC VR. We hope this information is helpful. Please get back to us if you have any other questions or if you need any additional help, and we'll be more than happy to continue to help you!

I have made sure that it is set to use the GPU. Is there a tool I can use to see if my hardware is compatible?  I intend to check this again when I get back home. (Again, I suspect it’s an internet connectivity issue.) I have been able to get it working once, but it was very “stuttery”. I suspect this issue as it happened once with my desktop pc when bandwidth was limited.

We don't generally have a tool, but we do have this link where you can check to see if you meet the requirements to use Quest Link. Please keep in mind that if your specifications are not listed as supported, we can’t guarantee compatibility. If you think this is a network issue, we are happy to provide some troubleshooting for it too. Please read below.

  1. Restart the device.
  2. Try another application to check if the connection issue is related to the Oculus app only.
  3. Try another connection type (ethernet or Wi-Fi).
  4. Try checking the settings of the antivirus software for options to whitelist or add Oculus as a trusted program.
      - Adding the Oculus application to the antivirus software’s whitelist or trusted list should help resolve slowdowns or issues accessing content without compromising the user’s system integrity
  5. Try a different network, one with no restrictions.
      - Trying another network without a proxy can help resolve any slowdown that occurs when routing internet traffic through another network.

Let us know if this does the trick for you or if there is anything else we can do to help. We look forward to hearing back from you soon!

I checked the link provided for compatibility and all requirements are either met or exceeded, aside from the onboard graphics.  I think I have bypassed those but am not entirely sure.  The network issue is something I cannot resolve here, the hotel controls their modem/router so I'm unable to power cycle it or really do anything with it.  I have used my phones hotspot but the connection is comparable to the hotel's internet (roughly 10Mbps up and down, where as home I have 1Gbps speeds).  I have also tried stand-alone hot spot, but again comparable to hotel's speeds.

Going into Graphics Settings, and setting the OVRServer_x64.exe to power saving, seems to be the only thing that works to prevent the black screen, but the stuttering is terrible.  I may be out of luck until I can get home and do further testing.

Thanks for the additional information, @Kryptkid! There could be a number of issues using a hotel's Wi-Fi, including distance to the router, public Wi-Fi settings, captive portals, Wi-Fi extenders, or mesh networks. Please let us know if this continues on your home network, and we'll be glad to assist further!
