Quest 3 Can't get Link cable to connect to PC

Randallyz450f

Hi, i can't get my laptop to connect to my quest 3 using the oculus cable.

oddly enough it will connect through the Air connection, but not cable.

note an additional message shows up at the top of the oculus page saying. " you computer does not meet the minimum specifications, which can lead to poor experience"

this in itself is odd, given i have:

- i7-1265U  64GB

-24GB GiGaBYTE  Egpu connected to thunderbolt

Hi there, @Randallyz450f! Thanks for reaching out about this. We absolutely understand how alerts and notifications can really take us out of the game, and we'd be happy to take a look into this with you. Below, we've listed some questions to catch up to speed:

  • Are you using a USB or USB-C port on your computer?
    • If you have more than one, does this continue while connected to each?
  • What operating system are you working with?
  • Can you tell us about your graphics card?
  • Did your Quest link cable work previously with your current set up, and when did this start?
  • Have you tried any other 3rd party cables or Meta Quest Link Cables?
  • Do you use any adapters or cable extenders?
    • If possible, remove any adapters from the headset.
  • How many USB devices are connected to your PC?
  • Have you tested with the bare minimum of USB devices connected to the PC? (e.g., only the mouse and keyboard)

I'm doing some experimental testing and will get back to you on what i find.

1. i'm pluggin in the headset to a thunderbolt port on a dell laptop.

2. Windows 11

3. Graphics Card is a egpu 24Gb using thunderbolt 40gb cable. Graphics look good when run smooth when i can get the cable to recognize

4. Cable is just very finicky to get started, but once its connect it now seems to work

5. no third-party cables used. just the oculus one

6. no cable adapters just plugged into laptop thunderbolt directly.

7. 4 including the headset

8. yes i have tested with just headset connected.

the issue seems to be that i have to power off the headset then power it on again...couple recycles and then finally the usb is found. having to do this is a serious weak point for what i think is a awesome headset.

Thanks for letting us know and providing all that information. We know that needing to frequently reboot really puts a damper on our playtime, and we'd love to get this resolved for you as quick as we can.

We'd like to mention that external GPUs aren't listed as compatible on our support site. If you haven't already, we can recommend checking out the minimum requirements to use Meta Quest Link. Please let us know if there is any additional information we can provide, and we'll look forward to hearing back from you.

yes i understand that they are not listed. But i can say for sure when used right they are great for Laptops.

TH3P4G3 Graphics Docking Station with a GIGABYTE Radeon RX 7900 XTX Gaming OC 24G Graphics Card, 3X WINDFORCE Fans, 24GB 384-bit GDDR6, GV-R79XTXGAMING OC-24GD Video Card.

at first i used a 20gb cable and that looked bad on the meta quest 3. Screen was choppy and fragmented.

I then used a 40gb cable and wow things work really well.  To give you an idea, i have the Quest 3 at the 4122 resolution 120hz and maximum graphics one one of my games and it works with no shutter in frames.

again the issue with the usb connecting

Awesome! It's good to hear that the 40GB cable is working well for you, and we love that you're trying out new things to heighten your VR experience! We definitely want to make sure your headset is staying connected and recognizing the USB connection on the first try. Do keep in mind that we do not recommend using any additional or external adapters when connecting your Quest link, as our programming has optimal performance when connecting directly to the IGPU. Here are a few other things to give a try in order to help with the USB being recognized and staying connected:

  • Update device drivers by following these steps.
  • Connecting the cable directly to the laptop USB ports.
  • Verifying if this error occurs on a different PC.

Additionally, any screenshots of this error that may come up when you attempt to connect, would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
