Quest 3 Chromatic Aberrations

Papadodu
Explorer

Hello, I recently received a new Quest 3 as a replacement for a defective unit. I've noticed chromatic aberrations on the new headset, particularly a green or violet image doubling on text and certain colors like blue or purple. This phenomenon is especially pronounced on the lens peripheries, with the image only being clear at the center.

This aberration causes slight motion sickness I hadn't experienced in a while, along with rapid visual fatigue due to the double images. I've observed that my current Quest 3 is on version V60, unlike my old Quest 3, which was on V59. After researching, I found old messages about Quest 2 facing similar issues at V35, resolved only by V37.

I'm wondering if other users are experiencing such pronounced chromatic aberrations on their Quest 3. I've performed three factory resets and checked the foam positioning, but the problem persists. Is it possible to revert to a version before V60 for testing?

I hope it's not a hardware issue with my pancake lenses, and I'm optimistic that a software fix will be available soon. Thank you for your response, and here's an overview of the chromatic aberrations I observe in my headset.Screenshot_2023-12-22-04-32-43-906_com.miui.gallery.jpgScreenshot_2023-12-22-04-32-21-322_com.miui.gallery.jpg

Hey there, @Papadodu. We want to thank you for bringing this to our attention and for providing those screenshots of exactly what you are seeing. This helps a lot! We also appreciate you trying the factory reset a few times, and to answer your question about converting, unfortunately, it is not possible to revert to a previous version. Hi, I wanted to confirm to others that might read this that the v60 update does appear to introduce significant chromatic aberration for some users. My headset showed very little aberration when new, but after the update shows colored shadows almost exactly as described by Papadodu. Hopefully this can be addressed in a future update.

I have performed about fifteen resets, thinking there might be an issue with this V60 🤔, but the problem still persists... 😭

I noticed the same issue on my father-in-law's headset after upgrading to V60 😐. I believe for a VR novice on the Quest 3, this chromatic aberration sensation isn't immediately apparent. However, for someone with prior experience who may be more sensitive, it's quite bothersome, even visually tiring 🙁. Meta, we're reaching out for you to investigate the source of the chromatic aberration issue, which had been acknowledged during the V35 era on the Quest 2. Thank you 😉.

Highly noticeable issue with violet colors (for instance, the loading logo in Asgard Warth 2 and even menu text duplicating... 🤢). Additionally, blue, green, and white text colors are also affected. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced in peripheral vision 😡.

I noticed similar issues although did not have such a fancy name to explain it.

At first I though it is thing of the lenses but it wasn't.
While playing a round of Moss I noticed that the blurry effect is actually related to the screen position.
It is literally like a tunnel effect - a more or less circular portion of the screen is as sharp as can be.
Around this however you can see how the texture changes.
Like those embroidery edges on the Moss book - they go from high resolution to low resolution.
It is NOT a lens effect, not some color shifting stuff, it really is lowering the texture quality in what one might call the areas of peripheral vision.

The effect is not always noticeable but once you found it you can't unsee it 😞
I also noticed at times that with the V60 the Quest 3 can be quite glitchy - to say it nicely.
All of a sudden the screen dims - clearly a power saving feature gone wrong as my battery won't really drain while hooked up.
Sometime the screen just turns off and the thing goes into standby without warning or reason based on battery levels.
And when things get really bad these low res texture exchanges in the outer ranges go nuts.
Texts doubles or where there should be text or icons to click you see nothing, ok, sometimes random flashes of what should be there.

When I tried to look these issues up I found this topic but also some posts elsewhere for other devices, non VR devices I might add.
The common factor here seems to be optimisation and power hunger.
What you (usually) won't be able to see 100% does not need to be rendered at full capacity....
And it won't heat thing up for no reason.
In VR we are dealing with TWO, not just one screen and almost always 3D textures.
The issue with optical sacrifices is that there is ALWAYS people badly affected by it.
Take the blue light things, some just can't stand it.
But if you 'fix' the blue light on the screen all colors are messed up.
And well, if something I CAN see clearly suddenly turns blurry or worse for no reason I call it an utter failure.

The home environment looks horrible enough as it is in low res but if now everything else is being distorted just to deal with overheating issues and such....
Mabey a more powerful fan with bigger airvents would have been great....

Hey there, @Papadodu. Thank you for providing these additional details! With this display concern reflecting on different devices, we did want to follow up and recommend submitting a Bug Report from your headset or mobile app, if you haven't already done so! Our team is eager to continue looking further into these reports and getting to the bottom of this!
