On the onscreen keyboard I tap the Microphone key so that I can dictate my typing. The putt on says Initializing for several seconds and just shuts off.
How can I make dictation work?

So, yesterday, just for fun, I broke out my Quest 2, charged it up to install WhatsApp and updated the firmware to V62. I had heard somewhere that the Q2 dictation worked (at some firmware level I guess), but I got the same result. The dictation worked one time only after I linked the Q2 to WhatsApp and then proceeded to give me exactly the same 'not supported' message that the Q3 does.
Since this issue has been bouncing around Reddit and here since last fall, I don't harbor hopes for an early resolution unless we are somehow building up a critical mass here just by ourselves...funny if that happens, but priorities get set somehow, right? I suspect that this is not a hugely difficult fix since it works once....you just have to get it to work once, N times...voila!
Enjoy your week, all

I am a Sr product manager in a healthcare domain. I have been using quest 3 for a month. Software is updated to the latest version and its on auto update. My voice to text works fine but the only problem I see is if I don't speak for like 2 seconds the voice to text disables. you know as a human sometimes they Need few extra seconds, in that process mic is not picking up what user wants to say. either the mic listen time should be increased or give user the option to stay alive until user manually disables the mic by clicking on mic button.

Also Please provide a support for voice to text in Whatsapp, Facebook and Messenger.

while I can use this feature in web-based apps (like microsoft word), it is not available anywhere in meta quest 3 system. for example, there is not any related feature inside settings>system despite that it mentions "voice commands" there. or, i'm writing this in meta browser in my quest 3 with point-and-write method with vKeyboard while I expected to use my voice for this purpose. my version is v66. it is strange that a very high-end technology, like VR device cannot provide a 10-year old technology!!

So....here it is a few months later and I decided to try speech-to-text in WhatsApp chat again and found that nothing has changed, nothing has been done.
Very disappointing. On the way, I discovered that your display setting in the Zoom area can disable your ability to actually enter the 8-character code that WhatsApp asks for when you try to link the Quest 3. 'Nother story for another time, right?

It appears that the WhatsApp developers 'fixed' the broken speech-to-text dictation feature. They removed the microphone key from the keyboard so the bug is no longer expressed.
Of course, the feature is gone as well and, as someone expressed earlier, using the keyboard for chat whlle using Quest 3 is extremely awkward and cumbersome for some reason.
Makes WhatsApp kinda not worth using really.

Brilliant; 'resolving' a bug by just removing the feature...........
