Quest 3 Link Tearing

Alex1652
Explorer

Using Quest 3 with official Link cable, USB test in Quest Link App reports 2.2Gbps.

This happens with every game basically, usually after a loading screen, where there is 0 fps during load screens, then the image starts to tear, The game itself runs stable 120fps or 72fps depending on the setting. PC can hit 120fps @ 5408x2912 resolution on them but i turn it down to 72Hz @ 4128x2208 because its recommended settings, hoping it would resolve the issue, but it didnt.

I can see on the PC screen the game is rendering smoothly, and movement is also fluid, but in the headset, image is clean only if the head is absolutely stationary, but as soon as i move my head, it starts to tear, no input lag, nothing performance related. it seems the left upper side of the hmd screen is couple frames later than the rest.

I did factory reset on the headset, tried 3rd party cables, reinstalled Quest link software and drivers, nothing seems to help.

@Alex1652  Hard to suggest a fix because you don’t include your pc specs, which link cable, and your ODT settings.

In general I’ve found that screen tearing is caused by using too high encoding bitrate and sometimes wonky ODT and/or nvidia control panel settings.  Also, you’re best to avoid 120Hz refresh rate with PCVR.  I use 80Hz with the res slider full right and this works great.

i9 13900K water cooled, RTX4090, Z790 MB w/wifi6e, 32Gb 6400 ram, 2x2TB SSD, 1000W PSU, Win 11, QPro, Q3, w/Link and Air Link, Vive Pro1 with 2x2.0 base stations, Etsy lens mod and Index Controllers

Ryzen 9800X3D, RTX4090, 128GB 7200 ram, 4TB samsung 990 pro. Win 11 23h2.

I have tested, from 100mbps to 600mbps encoding with 50mbps intervals. nothing to do with that, tried with sliced encoding on and off, off is bit better but problem still stands. ODT settings are not touched, except bitrate and sliced encoding.

As i said i turned down the refresh rate to recommended but problem still stands.

Yes, i got no reply from direct message as you suggested.

Also the meta overpriced Link cable

@Alex1652  Try to make sure you don’t have any unnecessary usb devices connected because you can run out of usb bandwidth.  Some Bluetooth devices like speakers close by can also cause problems.

Using DDU in safe mode (google how to do this) to properly uninstall previous driver and try game driver 560.94.  Set all nvidia control panel settings to defaults except power= prefer max performance and change Quality default below that to High Performance.

Win10/11 graphics settings disable hardware acceleration graphics (hags) and turn game mode off.  Check device manager usb port properties and disable any power savings.

Meta link pc app device graphics try 80Hz refresh rate and res slider full right.

ODT all defaults/zeros except distortion low and encoding bitrate 500mbps.

I suggest you try all that and see if this helps.  If not, make sure you’re not using any overclocking and maybe try lowering your ram speed down to 6000-6400.

Sorry mate, all I can think of.  You should get great results with your current PC imho.  Good luck mate and cheers.

If you read my initial post, you would understand this is not a performance issue, the game runs well, even when the link cable is not working. Steam link works perfectly, but i want to use link cable for higher bitrate than my router can handle, and also its more stable in theory.

The issue is not lag or something else, its purely the link software unable to transfer the rendered frames to the HMD properly.

no, its not Hardware or Driver problem, steam link works fine.

I tried every single combination, problem still persists.
