Quest 3: Overly yellow white-balance in menu text, bright highlights, etc.

Shrapnel5

Hoping to get a sense of if my lenses are a bad batch or if this is a software problem.  It feels like there is a dull yellow tinge everywhere there should be a white highlight, this is apparent in all the text and while it is less obvious in passthrough mode-- the moment you connect to pcvr and look at all your browser windows and other bright areas its hard not to notice how off-color they are.

If it were just balanced toward yellow that would be one thing, but it also feels like the overall brightness of the display is clamped down by this faint hue.

Since there are a few of you reporting this in your headsets now, I'd like to get some more details to look into it further (after you try the troubleshooting above).

If you're experiencing a more-yellow-than-expected display, could you let me know the following details as well:

  • Headset software version
  • Have you tried enrolling in PTC?
    • Is it still a yellow display if so?
  • If possible, a picture showing the yellow-tinted display

Update 10/18: After checking with the engineering team, it sounds like this is likely a result of the pancake lenses used in the Quest 3. Some users see a yellow peripheral glow in their display with pancake lenses (such as with the Quest Pro and Quest 3). This is a common phenomenon in LCD displays. In order to reduce or eliminate this glow, you can adjust your headset fit by adjusting the lenses and fit of your headset, as well as lowering the brightness of your display for visually high contrast content.

Make sure you smash that Kudos button!

Hey hey @Shrapnel5, congrats on getting your Quest 3! I haven't heard about this issue yet, but I'm wondering if you may have accidentally turned on the Night Mode in your settings. I know that puts essentially a yellow/orange filter over everything you see in VR, and that could be what's happening based on what you've said here.

So I would first recommend checking that setting to make sure it isn't enabled, and maybe also check the brightness level of your headset as well. If you're still seeing your colors as slightly off, then I'd suggest a reboot, or even a factory reset.

If after that you're still seeing this, could you post a screenshot of what you see so we can get a better picture of what you're seeing?

Glad im not alone here, when i got my quest 3 i also notice the same issues, i tried check colors, resetting my headset, checking if nightmode was on, but it did not work. I tried searching the internet for a fix but found nothing since, well new great device. I did no really notice this problem in pass through, but in game, colors felt very off. If issue is found, please let me know how to fix it

Hello, I am experiencing the same issue. It's very noticeable. I did check and night mode is not on.

Last night I linked up my quest 3, for the first time, to my PC and then selected Monitor in the headset to view my PC monitor on the Quest 3 display.

I noticed straight away that the color balance of the screen, as seen on the Quest, was warmer than when I look at it without the Quest 3, or indeed if I look at it through the Quest 3 in passthrough mode.

On the link, either cable or air, the monitor shows a distinct warm tone, with white skewing towards the orange, indicating that color balance in the Quest 3, when viewing a monitor through link connect, is set too warm. Not much, but it makes it useless if I wanted to edit photos in Lightroom.

Is there anyway to alter the color balance myself? or do I need a sidequest app of some kind?

Got my Quest 3 recently and noticed right away that there is some kind of vignetting going on at the end of the edges if the lenses. I reached out to many people saying it's because of the pancakelenses and some saying it's not normal. Anyone that knows what's going on? Do I have a problem with my device or should I keep it, since it's normal?

Hi @OctBoy

I think what you're noticing is the smaller 'binocular overlap' of the headset.

In essence, the Quest 3 is like a set of binoculars that are a little further apart. So if you look quite off centre you will be only looking through 1 lens. This does have the effect of being able to see the edge of each lens in certain circumstances. This was done (I Believe) to extend the horizontal field of view which was one of the main complaints of the Quest 2.

I would try moving the lenses using the wheel to find a better position or using the eye relief feature. Some people find getting closer to the lens helps, for others being further away.

Any thoughts from customer support on this?

I returned my first one but second one has the same issue.  I think that some of us are more sensitive to it.  I'd just love to try a headset from someone that says they can't see it just for comparison.  Is it us, or is it inconsistent products?
