Quest 3, VR desktop, audio works everywhere except in video player

Just upgraded to Quest 3 from Oculus Rift. Oh, and I'm using air link.

When I run VR Desktop I get beautiful audio to the headset from VR Desktop 3D movies, Meta Quest Link experiences, web browser videos, and my music player. But when I double click on an mp4 file and the "Movies & TV" video player launches, no audio. None with "Media Player" either. The only video player that provides audio is "Windows Media Player" but my understanding is it is obsolete and no longer supported. Plus, the controls are clunky and a pain.

Oculus Rift played video files just fine (with audio). Spent a few hours looking through forum posts and troubleshooting tips. No luck. Seems like the problem is Video Player App related but can find no settings that are audio link specific within the app settings. Weird that all other audio sources work including youtube videos, MusicBee mp3 player, VR desktop 3d movies (which are mp4's), and Meta Quest Link experiences; just not mp4 2d video players.

Thank you for this update, @WonkiGimbal. While we're glad you're able to hear your MP4 files when dragged into the browser, definitely let us know if there are any differences seen when connected via a Link cable if tested. So that our engineers are able to gather more details to look into this concern as well, we'd like to also have a bug report submitted to keep a record of this activity. Of course, if any issues remain, do let us know! We'd love to continue working with you!

Hey @WonkiGimbal. We'd love to assist you with this issue. We do have a few questions:

  • Does the issue happen in the Home environment or with 3rd-party software (like SteamVR)?
  • Does it happen right away or after longer sessions of use?
  • Has the product been dropped or neglected?
  • Is this happening with only specific game rooms or all of your games/apps.

Also have  you tried to reset the device? Looking forward to your reply.

Well, since it's when I'm running Virtual Desktop (I called it VR Desktop above), and that is a steam product, I'd say 3rd-party.

  • Does it happen right away or after longer sessions of use?

Right away

  • Has the product been dropped or neglected?

Brand new. No neglect.

  • Is this happening with only specific game rooms or all of your games/apps.

As far as I can tell it is only two video players: "Movies & TV" and "Media Player", neither play audio.

UPDATE: I can drag and drop the mp4 videos into my browser and they play just fine (including the audio, and the controls are very similar to "Movies & TV"), so I am in good shape.

Also, I tried a cable link, but it was not an "active" USB cable so I couldn't even connect to the PC. May try with an active cable later.

UPDATE: I tried linking with an active USB3C cable, was able to connect, but there was still no audio with the video players.

Also, I indicated that my previous Oculus system had no trouble playing the audio when using the video player, but I realized this is not necessarily true: the built in headphones had failed years ago (I got the system in 2016, so 4 to 6 years ago) and I switched to wearing my wireless headphones over the headset. This means I was listening to the audio directly from the PC not through the headset. So this issue could have begun anytime during that period. I might not even have used this particular video player back when I was using headset audio.

I'll go ahead and click "Accept as Solution" and submit a bug report.
