I got my Quest 3 on Saturday and since then, I could compare it very well to the Quest 2. Unfortunately, the microphone on the Q3 seems to sound awful compared to the Quest 2. Is there any news if this will be addressed in a patch?
I am specifically talking about lots of breathing noise, as well as a general lack of audio fidelity in recordings using the internal microphone. It almost sounds like a low bitrate and like lots of compression. I tested the mic using the build in screen recording, via link cable and air link.

Our engineering team is actively looking into microphone issues and would like to get some more details so that they can reproduce things on our end. It'd help a lot if we could get some recordings of the audio through an app like Audacity, so if you have anything to share, please do feel free to send them our way.
The engineering team would like to clarify a few things, so if anyone is experiencing trouble with microphone quality, can you share the following:
How consistent is this happening? Is it every time or only at certain times?
Are you mostly seeing this with Link, Air Link, PCVR through another route, or standalone?
Does it only happen in specific apps, and if so, which apps?
Are you using any accessories with your Quest 3 that might cover parts of the headset like custom straps or anything that might cover microphones?
If you're willing to share recordings, we’d like to get a couple specific things:
A recording using the built in headset recording app that has you speaking normally in the apps you’ve noticed this in.
A recording using your phone, ideally showing how you’re wearing the headset.
You can share any recordings to our support team account by clicking on our username and sending a private message. Make sure you note how you recorded it and what problem you're seeing specifically.
We've also seen some people reporting the mic not working at all, so for that just a couple things to check:
Does the mic work in the Meta Party Chat or through game chat?
Is there any relationship between when you're in a party chat or just using game chat? If you're only having mic trouble in one of the two, let us know!
When it's not working, make sure you're checking the system mute button at the bottom of your settings.
I have reported the problems to Meta and all they have done is send me a label to return it and get a replacement which I think will be a complete waste of time as everyone I know on VR that has a Quest 3 has issues with the mic. It is hopeless at picking up external sounds like acoustic guitar or Bluetooth speakers, which makes live performances impossible. My friends resorted to using the Quest 2 to play live music and sing karaoke.
Same here! I didn't send ik back either. Told them my new one probably would have the same problem (and maybe even more problems) I still have my quest 2 which I will use when I need quality audio.
Ahh I totally forgot about stuff like this.. the front sound cancellation mic at the front will eliminate things like this.. Meta I think messed up the SOCIAL aspect up big time.
This is really an huge failure from Meta engineers... LOL... that's probably the reason why on several social apps like VRChat voices coming from Quest 3 users sound like crackling because of the very badly positioned microphone and also badly implemented noise noise cancelling software.
I'm experiencing this as well. It is so bad multiplayer experience is not useable. Can we please get an update on the plan to fix this? This should have been resolved before the device was released. It needs to be fixed ASAP. Does anyone on the Meta team even care?
On my quest 3 in stand alone whether in a party or in a group on horizon worlds no one can hear me at all. Its like the mic just doesn't work cause in horizon worlds we noticed my avatars mouth doesn't even move at all but my friend Everytime he speaks you can see his avatars mouth move. I have went into both horizon worlds and oculus settings and toggled the mic but since day 1 no one has been able to hear me at all on the quest 3
